0:50 little bit let's get to know you oh my gosh honestly that was so entertaining um yo dude like tell us a little bit about who you are how you got started I know we already talked about like you got a magic box when you were 10 years old uh you got your first job at 13 which was 100 bucks which was sick oh what did your parents really want you to do yeah you said you're like South Asian right like and then like I mean East Asian South Asian it don't matter all of our parents want us to be doctors or something I went to school I got a degree oh nice yeah I went to school for computer science okay so it was like software world so that was like non-negotiable with parents they're like no you got to go to school but they're very supportive but they're just like you got to go to school so they supported your whole Magic Journey but they're like you need a backup plan exactly that's exactly what like my my parents exactly well I don't know I don't know what what he is so I'm making it up like it just kind Turkish accent
1:42 right we need a backup plan but yeah they just they were very supportive they loved um like there's one magic shop in Toronto and they used to drive me there all the time and it was far from where we lived but it was like you know they they take me there whenever and um my first like like theater show that I did was when I was 16 I got like a small theater was like 100 200 seater and we just like packed it with like friends and family that's just hustling like yo yo yo next weekend what are you doing boom Oh that's dope and my parents helped you know pay for the venue and get the props and things like that yeah yeah so they they definitely helped with all that you know yeah and then but was there ever like push back from them and then you were like all right let me do a trick on you and then they're like ████ all right no there's a lot of push back cuz they they didn't think it was going to be like my career like they didn't think I you know what I mean they were just supportive because they're like oh like he likes trying things and you know ever like magic let's let's figure it out but then
2:32 I started doing it a lot more and then they started seeing I was like like really pushing after it and then in University when I went uh to study like my grades weren't doing too hot and they were like ah like yo it's probably the magic you know he's and it was true because like I take like shows a night before an exam I'd be like screw the exam like I'm going to do the show and then I'll take the show and forget you know that there's a whole exam and you know so they were very worried do they ever see your grades and they're like I thought you knew magic can't you bring it up 100% they they they all the jokes they asan dad joke super asan probably heard it all I've heard it all like oh um but yeah they and then I think what really changed it was TV like I did a show called Canon's Got Talent and I was a finalist on the show and that really like oh always TV that's the way TV TV dude yeah yeah they also like
3:22 would come to the shows and make sure that everything was good you know check in but again when I was saying I'm doing it as a job they're like how are you going to make money like what what are you going to they didn't see how it like you got paid for the gigs and all that I'm the only one in my family like that is in the entertainment field like there's no uncles oh you're the only Warlock the Warlock that was that was the only one uh but then I started also being more like transparent with like oh I just got this check and they be like what like how like I remember the first time I got paid like $1,000 that was a lot of money and I was like wo like $1,000 for like you know an hour of my time and they were like wo like this is a lot of money for just an hour but they're like can you do this consistently like day no but for real and it's just like and then and then I did and then the number kept going up and then every time I'd be more transparent be like look this is this is the new check and they be like whoa like this is more than the last one and then it just kept going and then the TV show thing happened and then it just they were like very supportive with like cool like when were you able to go full

5:03 then there's um one in Pittsburgh I forget the name and then one in Nashville House of Cards in Nashville but again I'm in Toronto I'm like my parents are going to fly me out to these places also being Canadian you need a work visa to come work here which simple thing you know yeah so that that made it really tough so I just would book like the most random things like church party like communion this like anything you can think of I was I would do it and like sometimes I show up and it's just like a bunch of drunk guys in a corner I'm like oh okay like here's a car trick uh and they're just like not even paying attention but I'm like cool this is how I'm working this is how I'm getting my chops up and like I got better at dealing with people and and and hecklers and whatnot you know at a very young age from high school you never you never to do like a church thing and then they're like the devil it's actually happened like yeah so so cuz I started doing also hypnosis as well and so like once I started doing that that got a lot more crazy like I had a good friend of mine
5:53 whose mom called him and was like yo like don't go to a show like and I was like wa like that's I'm like you know I'm not doing anything like this just science you know like hypnosis is all science and how it all works so what's the craziest like hypnosis thing youve done the craziest hyp uh it's hard to say because like I do a lot like I do a 90-minute show so like I'll I'll bring them up on stage I'll hypnotize like 30 people and I'll get them to do like some crazy stuff on stage like it's a it's a fun show has anyone ever asked you to um get hypnosis coaching from you so they can like Hypno hypnotized girls to want to sleep with them oh like pickup stuff uh no is like hypnotized pickups so they could just hypnotize a woman Hypno can you make Nick gay right now forget that you were ever gay that's the best what did you just say you forgot I don't know I don't know
6:44 what happened three times you tapped me three times did you did you have like a like a magician Idol when you growing up uh now even yeah you know what I think I think what was it or you hate them all I hate them all you hate them all there's definitely play a ████ hack like that there's definitely beef in the mic Community it's we we nipp competitive yeah it's very competitive competitive scene and also like people are weird about like uh cuz also in Magic there's no like you know in comedy like there's the whole ethics thing like you can't steal a joke like if you see a comic doing it in Magic the thing is though in Magic is a shared art so like you learn by sharing it so like inevitably there will be other magicians doing similar things but in like a stage context if like you're sharing a story of your life and d and you're you're doing this trick but it's in the context of your story if someone comes and steals that story and does the same trick with that becomes kind of weird but there's no ethics in there like like a magician can do that and like no one would ever say anything

11:47 oh like that's kind of working and then like they could also kind of tell like something was off and they come to be like look is there anything we can do we love to help and like uh I have a team you know I work with and we called them like guys like this is not is going you know according a plan like whatever and they're like yo maybe we pivot we do something different but like we're filming tonight like we got to have this you know semi-final act ready to go uh and so I'm just like ████ it I'm doing it and I just did it in the first time the trick worked from A to Z was when the lights were on the cameras were rolling and we were in front of the live audience of 3,000 people and the judges were there only time the trick worked from 8 to Z better under pressure you're better than the playoffs dude it was it was insane and like it's so funny because you watch the ending clip like I'm just so relieved cuz I'm like like that worked like like you know and and like I had my brother on the sideline he had like he like y I'm jumping on the screen if something goes like just like backup plans of just what are we going to do like what's going to happen and

13:27 and I'm trying to like stab it I'm like where am I going you know and then it just didn't work so like we we went back to okay we're going to do it with um with uh just bills and just you know make it so it's fanned out like this and I'll throw it hopefully I'll I'll hit it every time in a rehearsal it always missed like always like there was never once it worked and I was like but in my mind I'm like I know everything will work if the right conditions are there and I can do it properly but that was one time got to watch that man yeah yeah and it's crazy cuz no one knows that behind the scenes of like that was what was happening even the first act like when we were doing it like the First Act I tried to do something a little different I was like you know what instead of themb buzzing I'm going to buzz myself so like I walked out on stage and like I was doing this act where like if if I got something wrong I would Buzz myself so I buzzed the first one I got the second one wrong I Buzz the the second one boom got the third one wrong I buzzed the third one if I hit the fourth one I'm out from the show
14:17 so I buz buzzed out three but then there was a conclusion to to the to the ACT but it was like something unique something a little different you know different but even that there was a lot of things that could have gone wrong with with that act that we were just like cool like let's just um let's just go through with it we'll make it happen and then that's that's how it worked and even the finale had it like like there were so many things behind the scenes like there was one thing like an hour before shoot the producer comes after to me was like Hey savy we're so sorry but like we're going to have to cut the ending of your act and I'm like what an hour before the finale and I was just like we got to cut the ending of the act like is ending of a magician's act like the final yeah reveal it was like it was one of those things where she just chopped someone in half and then that's it I'm leaving I'm leaving them I'm leaving them you got to put them back together dog commercial break um but we pivot you know we we got to Pivot we make it work you know and this is what I was saying earlier like
15:07 like the audience doesn't know that's the ending of the ACT sure yeah so you you know you you make something else yeah yeah so what's the kind of like career trajectory for magician is it Vegas is that where everyone wants to go like what's the kind of thing you know so I would say like there's ABC so a would be like Vegas like actually let's ABC actually I don't want to use letters because it feels like I'm putting it in a d category because it's not but there's like people who are kind of just like part-time hobby so like you know they may working full-time jobs but like on a weekend they'll go do an odd gig here and there and then they'll make some actual decent money on the side then there would be like the step up which would be like the working full-time Pro so these are guys that they gig like constantly so it's like literally every weekend they're doing shows and it could be you know birthday parties this that whatever you could imagine then there's like this next year where it's like it's like I guess Vegas would be there and then there's people who are like um it's not they're not
15:57 Vegas but they're kind of Vegas quality act but they're touring they're on the road they do a ton of high-end corporate gigs they do you know uh theater shows all this stuff and then we go one more level up which is where someone like David blae would be where they're doing TV work and they're doing the touring and the their name is so big and synonymous with magic and so they could do like a TV show around them or something 100% Shin Lim Shin Lim for sure cuz he won like AGT and twice and he won the the the runnerup show thing and I saw show in Vegas and it's sick really SI he's really good really really good his charisma's hilarious he also won uh the grand pre of magic so that happens every like 3 4 years it happens in different venues next year I think it's in Italy or or something like that I think yeah it's pretty crazy like you'd see like the most technically gifted guys come out there and and perform but the the thing is in the magic world I think this is true in a lot of fields but like a lot of people who are technically talented aren't always good
