00 I like to play like my whole life everything I did was competitive. >> What? What? Dance. >> Everything. Dance. Yeah. Every everything I ever achieved in dance was through competition. >> Well, in your head like how? >> But I play it really freaking chill. >> Welcome back to another episode of Careful Boys where uh Jason Channy here would like to ask a question. Oh, I was just wondering um if everybody how competitive is everybody here and uh why why not? And also what is the what is the how competitive are you and what are you willing to sacrifice and why is that too many questions? I was just curious. >> No, I think that was great. >> I think that's the right amount. >> Okay. >> What made you think this? >> Do two more if you can. >> Oh, honestly, I don't know. [laughter]
50 Well, I think it's a good question cuz everyone here is accomplished and I think like you have to be competitive to accomplish stuff. >> So, you are then but I think maybe what he's talking about is like um how competitive are you with others? Because I think with myself, I'm highly competitive, but with other people, I really I'm like with Nick, like just the last video we did with Nick, like um when I'm doing jiu-jitsu, my coach is always telling me to turn it up. Like he's like, "What are you doing? What are you doing?" And like um cuz when I do jiu-jitsu, I think I do it like I weigh 130 cuz I really enjoy jiu-jitsu. So I do it like I like the technique or whatever. And then so my coach would be like, "What the f███?" Like pick that guy up and slam him. like literally slam him right now and then but someone will like go like this. I'M LIKE, "OH,"
42 YOU KNOW, I'M LIKE, "OH, THAT WAS GOOD. That was a good sweep, man. That was so" and [laughter] he goes, "What the hell?" And I'm like, "In my mind, I like the creativity. I like the collaboration part of it." So, like, I'm not uh I'm not very competitive at all >> towards people. >> Towards people. >> So, you don't you don't challenge other people. You don't get your drive from dominating. You get your drive from like passing your your your PRs. >> My own benchmarks. Yeah. I'm like, "Oh, cool. I could have do this before. I can do this now. I like that. >> But seeing, sorry, but seeing other people do like more stuff, there isn't a little part of you like, oh, that would be >> I wished I was like that. >> Oh, you're not like that though at all. >> When I see other people compete and it turns on this other part of them and they have a drive and they get first place, they're like, "Yeah, all that hard work paid off." I wish I was like that.
32 >> Whoa. >> But I'm not. >> Yeah. That's really crazy because from the outside looking at a person who is like you or compared to another person who's doing the same thing, you can't tell because you're just trying to learn to and but the other person is like, "Oh, I want to be," you know what I mean? But then you're like, "Oh, >> to the trained eye, you can't." >> Oh, I see. I see. >> Coach will see me and he's like, like, let's say like we're both me and another guy white belts, right? I'm the white belt that's like trying to learn or I figure out positions, whatever. There's another white belt that's like, you know, some white belts like they they don't know anything. So if they go so if they go against the purple belt, they're still like they oh that guy wants to win. Even though he can't win right now, he really wants to win. >> Uh my coach is like, you need to be more like that. >> Ah, but I'm saying like uh if another white belt just like you that is like, "Oh, let me learn. Let me learn." But his ultimate goal is like, "Oh, I want
23 to be the best ever." But in do you know what I mean? Like the way they roll is still collaborative and wanting to learn. >> It's impossible. >> Oh, that's impossible. Oh, I see. I see. >> Yeah. The collaborative, whatever that style, you're not going to uh hone the skills to win a competition. >> I see. I see. >> Skills that you need to win a competition, you need be the first trigger puller >> and then win at all cost. >> I see. I see. Even when it seems like there's like there's no way out, like it looks like there's 10 roads and >> all nine are closed, the guy that wants to win finds that one more opening to ████ get out somehow. >> You're not like that in any areas of your life and none of you guys do. >> I don't I don't think I uh I don't think I've been like that in a long time. >> Work like Jay for JK or Okay. No, like even I think um I think I have a more Tai Chi approach if anything >> like if I got hit with a lawsuit instead
14 of a sue you back it's more like oh okay take this energy what can I go this way >> what can I learn about this >> and Lord that's like half sleeping >> yeah [laughter] or if I deal with like I don't know some crazy like like loan thing or whatever thing it's like oh the lone thing came this way turn my body this way [laughter] >> you always like that though >> I don't know >> oh or you don't know >> oh you know what no when I first did MMA and Even wrestling in high school, I think I had the competitiveness. I want to like ████ dominate and like beat some people up. >> Yeah. >> But I don't have that at all anymore. >> I wish I did, but I have it at all. >> That's like I'm extremely competitive. But >> are you really >> in a very dishonest way? [laughter] >> Like because because um I like to play like my whole life everything I did was competitive. >> What? What? Dance. >> Everything. Dance. Yeah. Everything I ever achieved in dance was through
04 competition. >> What? in your head like how >> and I play it really freaking chill. >> Whoa. Like how can you can you like oh in what scenario? >> I'm very grateful to be here. It's an honor to go up against Anthony Lee of Kinjas. Like I want to eat that guy alive. >> I was not going to ever lose like I was I'm that way inside but on the outside I'm just very gracious. >> Wait, are you being I I don't know if you're doing a bit. >> No, I'm not doing a bit. [laughter] >> That's how he is, bro. That's how he is. >> I'm not doing a bit. >> Are you serious? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> I can't I [laughter] see this guy play Soulcalibur, dude. >> No. No. Because like normally I'm very like I I think like the way that I the way that I idealistically want it to be is to just be like a a good sport. But in my mind what drives my actions is completely not that. >> So what do you think about destroy everybody that I go up against? It has to be big. Yeah. But it's all in here.
54 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So in dance it's like or in the same thing like like in my adult life like now like for me to get um >> like I there was I was going to get the job as music director for Paul Abdul's tour. >> I had to beat other producers with an auditioned piece >> and I'm like now I know I'll get it. If they just said let's see like make us a sample of some let's just see how it is. I would have not gotten it. But because I know there's a target and I have to like eat somebody then I can do it. It's like a weird thing that like like if if someone's calling me out like dance-wise then I'm going to be way better than if someone's like do a little showcase for the crowd like then it just feels like ████ >> I wish I had more of that. >> I have that but I but I'm I've I've been extremely quiet about it like my whole life. >> But you know what's crazy? But your actions isn't that I know you said is in
44 your head but your actions that the way you express it is very collaborative. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Do you know what I I mean, I think if I if it's collaborative, like I mean, it's different. It's like if if like 2005 when I was doing So You Think You Can Dance and I'm on TV doing interviews, I'm very like chill. I seem like I I don't know where I am and I'm like kind of dumb because that's idealistically I want to appear that way so that I can come out really hard when it's time to do it. >> This guy's reading Sunzu, bro. >> Yeah. It's like I don't It's just my imagination. >> You're weak when you're strong. >> Honestly, that's those are those are really good tactics. If if I think if my personality matched exactly my competition personality, I would be an unlikable person. >> So I try to relegate it only to selfware only to fuel the physical, >> but then none of my actual like presentation matches that at all because I think that's what makes it cool. I like that package better.
35 >> So like when you know like me and Harana we're going up against KJS and ████ like we're like, "Oh dude, this is going to be so fun. It's going to be so cool." But no, we're like [laughter] I ████ wipe her ass in my head. >> There was no way that I was going to accept losing. But see, but that's what I was talking about when cuz you said you did the bodybuilding thing and then you won, but then your uh the way you looked at it was like, "Oh, I just want to beat my own thing, my own," you know what I mean? Like I just want to hit my targets in bodybuilding, but then you won, you know, and then you're like, "Ah." But then for you it's like, "Oh, I'm gonna ████ make number one. >> I want to beat the person." >> Yeah. Oh, okay. >> Yeah. Beating my own personal thing doesn't mean anything. >> Like getting the place instead of them >> cuz the competition the competition is what makes it worth it to me because I'm
25 like it's like I have to have a target or else >> I it's I'm not a good enough person to go up against. >> Like so I'm I'm so opposite but I wish I had that. And this part that sucks because it'll be like, let's say I had a jiu-jitsu competition, right? >> If I got beat, I'm like, "Dude, that guy was so good." Like, "Id like, "That guy is better than me versus I want to ████ beat him." >> Yeah. >> And if I won and I got first place, but I know I didn't present my best self, I would actually be so sad. >> I would have like a world championship trophy, but I'm like, I was not I didn't even do half of what I know I could have done. I would actually be so ████ sad. And that's weird because people that actually are competitive that win, if they win, they win. That's the answer. But for me, it's like the win doesn't justify how I feel. If I lost and I know I did my best, I would ████ go to Cold Stones and get the biggest ice cream. I'm like, "F███ yeah,
16 that was sick." Like, you gave it your all. That guy was just better than you. Like, I would be happy, you know? It's like It's like a weird It's like a weird thing. >> Yeah. And that that's not to say that well that's not to say that I I don't I don't think like when I'm competing I don't think that I'm better than the person. The reason the fire is on is because I don't think I am and I can only beat them if I really ████ turn it on. You know what I mean? I don't think I have a chance being myself. >> So it's a good challenge. >> I think I have to be an elevated version of who I think I am in order to like reach that point. >> That's the ultra ego ████ I was telling you about, right? We were talking about that where it's like all the guys who I feel like are hyper competitive but in day-to-day life they're very normal like Ryan and they're very like collaborative. I feel like those guys when they compete they flip a switch. They assume a different identity when they compete. >> Do and you do that too. >> I feel like I had to learn how to do that. Like before it was just like all
06 right let's go out there see what happens. You know >> good competitors have to have the alternative. They have to >> they have to turn it on. And I feel like damn when I heard Ryan said I was like whoa I learned something new about this guy. That's Omron, brother. >> But that's the it's the feeling of like it's I think you're the same as me where like I you have to make it a switch because you don't necessarily like the person that you have to turn on. >> For real. >> I don't like that. >> I don't want to be that guy. >> I don't even like the thought that I know I have to turn it on in an hour. I hate that feeling. I'm like, God, I got to go in that head space and like become a freaking ████ [laughter] I'm not like being an ████ >> Monster Ryan. It's just that in order for that even to work for like a person like me that's normally just kind of go with the flow and like chummy then it's like oh I can't that doesn't work in competition >> Napoleon on and everyone hates Napoleon's [laughter] a dick dude you don't even hate Napoleon you know >> yeah but it's like yeah that's the only
56 way that I'll survive it's more of like that it's like I just know it's that way >> I'm curious about Joe who >> I mean I don't think so because I didn't grow up um doing anything like what do you call it like competition wise where I win and then like so like I know I have a competitive bone at times but I don't know like how it's expressed because like >> when if I want something if someone's in my way I'll ████ smash the ████ out of them to get the ████ out >> but >> it's not like first place >> like I don't care about sports or there's like usually it's attached to like a competitive you win this thing. >> But I'm like, >> let's say I want my store in this
46 location and I know that this motherfucker's eyeing it. I'll make sure I'll get it. Like that's my competition. >> I see. >> It's like I want that location. I'm going to get that location. But then I'm also realistic where it's like, >> okay, >> if it's gonna hurt me, I don't want to get it. >> Okay. >> You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. But then like >> I I Yeah. So, it's expressed in weird ways where I can't really pinpoint where out of nowhere I'm just like, "Oh, no. This ████ is trying to ████ my family. No, ████ that. No, they're going to I'm going I I can't ████ let them ████ my family. [laughter] >> He's got to go to a place." >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> But then like it's never like a skill or a hobby or something where I'm like, "Oh, I got to, you know, dedicate my life to jiu-jitsu so I could be a black belt and beat everybody." No, it could be like business or like an art thing, >> but it's like individual small bursts of
38 like out of nowhere like I hate this person >> and like I have to destroy them. >> Oh, you do do small >> just like one ████ because he looked at me this way and he said this thing to me, but then when I look back it's like I'm I'm hyping myself up. >> Anger issue. >> Yeah, I think that's homicide. [laughter] >> He's like I'm not competitive. I just have anger issue. He's a very spiteful person, [laughter] >> but it's tied to a objective, >> but it's never like a thing where it's like, "Hey, we're going to do the Spartan race." I love like these relay races and I'm like, "Let's go." >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Let's go. >> Love these Spartan races. >> Let me help you up. No. [laughter] >> See you at the end, loser. Everyone's helping each other. Oh, I got you. [laughter] Looks like you slipped on some mud. And I got into combat sports. Like I met Bard at MMA and I'm just
28 like, "Yay!" with the boys punching each other and we're learning how to fight. That's cool, right? But like none of it >> goes to the second stage of like, "All right, I want to I want to fight in a ring one day and then I want to do, you know, like there's no dreams of that." >> What about during training in jiu-jitsu? Like um when you're rolling, what is your attitude? Like let's say someone gets something on you. Do you have like the I got to get them back or like what is your attitude towards like like uh like when you're rolling? based on the person cuz there's some people where I'm like, >> "Oh, he's like weak energy and because I know that I'm going to match his energy." >> Like there's some people that are like I look over and I'm like, you know, you could beat him. That's why you're bullying them. Like I don't like that, you know? And then some people they're they're like too aggressive. So I'm going to try my best to ████ make
19 sure that like I could handle this ████ M >> so like it's never this like oh yeah I'll ████ kill you now like it never gets personal >> but but earlier [laughter] you're like sometimes you look at a guy you got to destroy him. What what what is [laughter] that thing >> there? No, but you're right. It's it's like >> that business thing. All Japanese people have it. >> Okay. Okay. It comes with boba time. I got to kill that guy. [laughter] >> I'm going to take everything you have. Let me get a tight tea. Oh, it's good. [laughter] >> What is that, though? >> I don't know. >> I LITERALLY DON'T KNOW. >> What's the ratio? How'd you do it? >> What? When am I doing that? >> No, no, no. I'm just curious of like what is [laughter] what it's just like a >> what are you doing when you
09 >> wants to know how the mind of a killer works? [laughter] >> Okay, I'll tell you this one thing. In a business meeting, right, this guy was extremely rude to me. He was extremely rude to me. >> So, >> um, and for no reason, he's just a old boomer that just like thinks he could talk to everybody like ████ >> So, I told him off, but then I thought that was that should be the end. Like, you should stand your ground, say your piece, that should be and it wouldn't leave my mind. So, I went home, I researched him, I found out where he lived, all of his family members, everything. I have a whole file of it. And that made me feel better. Okay. [laughter] Okay. Got it. That's pretty good, man. >> That's crazy. >> Style, dude. >> What's Omron? That's Ryan's ultra ego. >> Cuz a hacker. >> Yeah. [laughter]
59 >> So, if somebody wrongs Ryan, >> you're going to there's going to be a dossier on you, bro. There's going to be a file. >> Write an angry email and then one day your brakes aren't going to work when you're going like 100 miles an hour. >> And we don't know what happened. >> So mean. We don't know what happened. [laughter] I don't know. >> Banana in your tailpipe, you know. Uh
// end of tape
