00 [Music] Welcome back to Careful Boys. So, the Stranger Things finale has aired and a lot of fans are very upset in different ways. Is it cuz they had like a 1-hour monologue about being gay? That's part of it, but I don't know how much the fans cared about that, but it but the internet writ large >> Million things they don't like about it. >> Well, um When did you guys stop watching? Did you watch the whole thing? Middle of season 2. Me too. Yeah, middle season 2 I stopped. >> I watched every single episode except for anything from this current season. Oh, really? >> What are they on? Season what? >> Five. Five? Okay. So, this season apparently, and I don't know, I'm not Mr. expert about this, right? But this season was so um up and down about how the fans feel that fans started to come up with a theory, and that's kind of what this
51 article is about. They came up with a theory that what they saw in the final episode was BS and there's actually a secret episode about the drop. >> They believe that this can't There's no way this was the last episode because it was so bad. Because it was so unresolved. Apparently, they left so many threads unresolved. >> Did they not live during the Game of Thrones era? >> Yeah, the last season. Did you see I saw this one clip of all of them reading the like last script for the last time and they're like balling, right? And I was like, I see why now. It's cuz it's so bad. >> about Game of Thrones, right? >> No, no. Oh, this one? Stranger Stranger Things. You see the whole They're all like in the living room and ████ They're reading it and then they're like ████ crying. And I'm all like, yeah, it's probably like really bad. Yeah, well, apparently. I guess there are fans I'm sure who liked it, right? But so far the internet writ large was like They they did It's been poorly reviewed compared to previous seasons, for
41 example, like in the aggregate, like when you look at the ratings. So, like compared to like the last couple seasons, it has the lowest grade. First one was perfect. Perfect. >> think what It's one of those things where like it's really I I think it's really hard to carry a production on that's kids growing into like adolescence into like adults. Because like Especially if it takes 2 years between seasons. >> Yeah, and then they're not the chemistry, they're changing as people cuz there's like all this ████ drama, right? Isn't there like repressed the the Millie uh Brown girl doesn't want to be with that other and then they're like >> David Harbour, she said There was a claim that maybe they had issues on set. Oh, like essay and stuff like that? >> Well, there was something alleged, but I guess it was all overblown and misreported. >> That's how I was super impressed with Harry Potter cuz they all grew up together and they all the ensemble cast
32 stayed all the way through. Well, the story was finalized before the the movies. >> didn't they didn't like Well, they I think like I think like book like four and five or something like that were coming out when like the first movies were dropping, but like the difference is like a book is different than maybe like a production or a story told solely for like TV production. >> By the way, Bart looks like he would looked at himself in the mirror with a wand and he's like, "Expecto Patronum." Expecto Patronum. Also though, I'm going to retract everything I just said because Game of Thrones was a book prior, but like the way that it was done is sometimes they do a different version of adaptation for TV and then everybody got super pissed in that version anyway, so >> Well, it got to the point where it caught up with the books and it had to go Oh, cuz it was past past the books cuz they shot past the books. Well, the biggest problem with the Stranger Things finale was the writing, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah, so it doesn't matter all that other stuff. Yeah. They built things up
23 a lot. >> final fight was shorter than the gay confession. That's what I heard. But but the interesting thing too is I guess they kept on building up building up building up. And then like Vecna, who's the big bad guy, right? He kept on saying in almost every episode, he's like, "Now it's time." And so it's like every episode is like, "Now it's time." And people are like, "Can you just get on with it? Like just ████ do what you're going to do, brother. Like why do bad guys always wait so long? Just do your thing." Do you think the the writers got lazy? Did they get another job and they're like, "We're doing Marvel now." That's kind of what happened with obviously Game of Thrones, but I think in this case, I think they just they just set it up so much threads that they didn't know how to resolve them. Is what the internet is saying, not me. You thread two into a corner. Right. And then you only have There's too many different things going on. >> you only have a limited amount of time to wrap everything up. You can't do it all. You remember Lost?
14 Like They just gave up. They're like, "It was a dream that he had as he was dying on the beach cuz he died in the plane crash in the beginning." >> They just were like, "All right." Like it's like crazy. Yeah. But yeah, that that new conspiracy is I've never seen that happen with anything where something could be so bad that people refuse to believe that that was it. >> So, Variety >> What if the pop culture if it gets so insane that it's worth funding cuz they'll profit off of it? Like Peaky Blinders? Well, they thought it was going to be on >> They're paying these kids like 20 milli like to do this season, bro. It's like crazy. >> Well, they believed that that episode was going to come out yesterday, right? Yeah. So, Variety came out yesterday afternoon and had to debunk the whole thing on the behalf of I think Netflix. And it was basically like On behalf of the Duffer's >> There is no All episodes So, the Duffer's tweeted,
05 "All episodes of Stranger Things have been released. Every single one. Go watch them." And they started picking out little clues in to like figure that out. There's like a shot of that math teacher or whatever, the physics guy, and he's in front of like a school like chalkboard. And then it somewhere it said like 107. So, they thought that that was like the date the real episode would come out. >> because there continuity errors in the finale, like I guess at the end the cast sits down and like in the beginning the first season, which kicked ass, where they're all playing Dungeons and Dragons, they sit down to play Dungeons and Dragons again in that same basement. And I guess the doorknob is on the wrong side of the door. And so people are like, "See, it's Vecna's vision. He's ████ with the the timeline." And so they think that the ending happened, but it didn't and we're going to get an ending that's actually a good ending. So, fans are just cope bagging this
56 thing. But that's very It's like extremely sad though. That's how bad it was that it made everyone feel like >> how unsatisfied everybody is. Yeah, maybe it's not like badly produced, but that's how like everybody expected so much more. Being being as such a great series that always had huge revelations at the end of each season. And then this one's kind of like left you hanging. >> What did you think of season 4? How were you about season 4? >> I liked it. I liked every season. I heard it was decent. >> Yeah, I really loved it. I loved that show a lot. I'll continue watching it then cuz I think I left off around 3, 2. Once once once five came out and then the people that I've always talked with about the series were so upset as it went, I'm like, "Yeah, I don't know if I want to commit that time to that." And then have the same feeling as you. That's what I was going to catch up like just for funsies and now I'm out. >> Because I don't want the same thing that happened to me with Westworld to happen where like season 1 of Westworld so
46 ████ beautiful, but then like you could stop there and it's going to be the greatest like thing in your mind and you won't have the I guess the pollution of like where it ends up. That to me was Stranger Things season 1. >> Yeah, I love Stranger Things. Yeah. Here, maybe a warmest hot take. Um Game of Thrones. Probably the the biggest global phenomenon for a TV show and everybody was up in arms up in arms about the the finale season, okay? I totally understand. Um However, it was still such a great show that I still chose to later on go back and rewatch and binge it because everything was already out. And well, without the lag time, the 2-year wait from season ████ 7 to 8 or whatever where I was immediately disappointed by episode 4 or whatever the ████ because of Daenerys. And the dark episode. The dark episode was too
37 dark. Too dark. Without the lag time, it was still like I wish it didn't happen like that, but I could still enjoy the entirety of the season story and production. Is Is Stranger Things like that for a guy who fell off in season 2? Can I like binge the entire thing? >> I think so. I think I think you can because the thing that hurt fans was the expectation that it was going to be something else. If you already know Yeah, if you already know that, okay, I shouldn't feel that way leading up, you'll just enjoy it, I think. Yeah, cuz and also the wait period, right? Cuz like sometimes the expectation is completely magnified by the fact that like you waited 2 years for this season. So, the finale needs to be worth the edging for 2 years, you know? But here's what Game of Thrones did so well at, in my opinion, compared to Stranger Things. So,
27 in Game of Thrones season 2, I remember as soon as season 2 started, I was like, "F███, they introduced so many new characters. Like how am I going to get attached to any of these cats?" And then they're so good at story development and making you care about these guys. I did. But in Stranger Things, every time they introduce new people, I'm like, "Can we just get back to the old cast? Like what are you guys doing?" And and Like there's enough gold to mine from We're good. We already like these kids. Like like I'm already rooting for these kids. And then like, "Here's another person. Here's another person. Here's another person. Here's another person." Like literally just They they actually diverted the attention from the main cast to these new people. >> killing anyone? Because that's what Game of Thrones did well. They'll introduce new, but then like they'll kill off great people. >> Killed the lead. They killed the lead in season 1. >> And you're just like, "Okay, now my attention's on this person cuz you don't have them to worry about." But they did a good job of character building where you cared about the characters. And in
18 Game of or I think in Stranger Things, to me anyway, they did not do that for the new characters. So, I didn't give a ████ about the new characters. >> Right, there's like no time. Right. So, I was just waiting for the old characters to show up again and then they're they get less and less screen time. And frankly, less and less to do. Why do you think it didn't work out for The Last of Us? They got rid of the dad. Yeah, but like everybody who plays the game number one knew that knew that was going to happen. Number two, in the same reference to like something like Game of Thrones, which is brilliant storytelling, they killed Ned Stark at the end of season 1 and you're still down to follow along and see what happens. This one, the second What is his face, Pedro Pascal, dies or Joel in the in the in the story everybody fell off the show. Right. Well, they did in I think that to me the difference in Game of Thrones is they were like his kids need to get
10 revenge. Like we saw him put the head on the on the spike and they're like there's your old man like the Joffrey's like there's your old man right there and then we see the little the girl going like you can tell she's like I'm going to get I'm going to kill you brother. So I'm like I'm in for that. That's what kept kept me going cuz you know I think it was the first time it happened in like TV history where like a lead gets killed. Yeah. So you're like what the ████ this is revolutionary and you're like I can't wait to see what happens number two. One thing I will say though is that when shows are based really strongly on what are these things versus what's going to happen when the show ends and doesn't tell you what those things were you can't even watch the first things because you're like all of this is meaningless. Like if Severance ended in a way that it didn't explain what anything was it would make the whole thing poop.
00 Sounds like a JJ Abrams show. Yeah, you'd be like why does any of these questions that they're cuz then they don't know the answer they're just freestyling it. So like if Severance would be unforgivable. If Severance ended in a way where they're just like it's all a dream or it's aliens. Like you would never touch the back episodes ever again. You'd be like that's ████ >> But that's the mistake of thinking that new characters are already interesting. You have to make them interesting. Like Mark Hamill just came out about speaking of JJ Abrams. He came out about uh doing the Force Awakens and he's talking about how they never had a scene between you know Han Solo Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker and uh you know Mark Hamill goes up to JJ Abrams and he's like we should have like at least a scene of like getting the gang back together and just like talking for a little bit like just seeing where everybody is and JJ Abrams looking at Mark Hamill and he goes it's not Luke's story anymore.
50 And just just that to me shows the hubris of thinking that like these new characters are just as interesting as the old characters. You have to earn that with the audience. You have to make them interesting and make us root for them. Yeah and we also love the old characters for 30 years. What are you talking about? You finally bring them back make it about them. Nobody's like oh but they're old now I don't really want some Like when you were watching Stranger Things and then they showed the other kids from the uh lab. You know the ones that she didn't know about. >> ones, yeah. Did you already know that you were not going to care about them? Yeah, that was the worst episode I'd ever seen. Cuz they presented it so like you should care about them but it's like no I don't though. Like help me out like a little. Just give me something. Have them save Eleven's life or do something. Once that happened everyone's like oh no don't please stop doing this. Like don't do this a second or third or fourth time
41 and then they just kept doing it and you're like oh. No that was I think every time I've talked to a Stranger Things fan they all agreed with me that that is the worst episode and that made them start to fall off on it. >> Yeah, it felt like one of those like common episodes where they try to spin off to a new show. Exactly. You know what you know those backdoor pilots? It felt like that. I was like what are you guys doing? So who was the idiot that made that decision and everyone thought it was a great idea? I don't know but I do know that they resonated with them and the creators knew that people were not unhappy with that. Yeah and they didn't bring her back until the I guess the very end. Okay well I can't speak much on Stranger Things because I fell off season two but like just for the sake of this conversation what is a long-standing TV series or something like that that you did watch where it's like this ended well. I thought Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad gave me exactly what I didn't want to happen and that's why I loved it. Because he got what he deserved. Nobody won.
32 Like that wasn't supposed to win like it it was bad. I think Ozark too. I forgot how the ending ended but I remember it it being satisfying. Ozark you remember Ozark? Uh I watched Ozark. I didn't finish it because I was scared. I was scared to finish it. I didn't want to finish it. I didn't finish it. I didn't I didn't see it. Like I love this show called Californication with David Duchovny. Oh yeah I remember that show. I loved that show. It's such a good show. Yeah I'm older. And I I loved that show so much and I remember when it came time to watch the finale Nikki watched it without me cuz I was like I can't say goodbye to this show. Like I know that this show Yeah. is going to it's going to suck I know this finale is going to suck compared to what I want to have happen. So I was like I'm just not even going to watch it. I never watched it. So I haven't said goodbye to that show yet. I love that show. A lot of shows I like they don't actually get to finale. He comes out as gay at the end in
22 Californication. They don't end that good or you don't get to the finale or the show The show gets canceled. Wait, what are you talking about? A lot of shows I like. Yeah, that happened to me with Duster on HBO. I want I want to cry. The thing is even with Peaky Blinders number one this movie is going to be the end of Tommy Shelby in some way. That's supposed to be the end though. And then number two apparently they're greenlit for two seasons that follow Barry Keoghan potentially or something that continues on the story which of course is not going to be as good but at the same time he's tight so whatever. But there's a new season of Young Sheldon on. >> You're crazy. Also though also also this video is doing so I'm going to say Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Yeah, perfect to the end? Remember the ending? No. Well, it doesn't matter then.
