00 Have you guys ever messed up and put reply all and you ended up saying something to everybody that you only meant for three people to read? >> Yes. >> You've done that? Okay. >> Not in the same context, but I did send the wrong ████ to the wrong person before. >> So, I've told this story before about how like prior to Quest Crew, I was part of another crew called Six Step and it was during the transitionary period where like we started to feel like uh things were whack and we wanted to do our own thing. And we When I say we, I mean like me and like two other guys. It's And this team had like 20-something people in it. Um and this one time I was emailing a couple of the guys >> Just the two guys, the couple guys. >> Yeah, just like talking ████ cuz I'm an ████ and and I understand the error of my ways now. It's very rude. But I

51 was just basically talking crap about how I thought uh the team sucked. And and um I accidentally uh continued that conversation on the wrong thread and then I replied to basically the whole team >> [laughter] >> talking about how like how I thought it was whack or I forgot exactly verbatim what I said, but it's super unkind to other people. >> Were you pointing fingers, too? Like this guy did this and that and that way this sucks cuz this guy and >> I think I I wasn't I don't think I was naming specific people, but I did say like I did I I think I did say that everyone else was like we had to pull the weight for all the other people who sucked. Like something really like not nice. >> That's ████ tough. >> Not really not nice. And so like and

42 that's like whack to do, of course. And then um >> [laughter] >> then I got a response from like someone not in my initial like who I thought I was talking to. I was like, "What the heck?" And I'm on like a desktop computer at this time. This is like 2000 five or six. Um and then I'm like, "Oh, s███." What do I How do I follow up? Cuz then I think it was it might have been the leader dude was like "Oh, I didn't know that's how you felt." Or like he was like trying to be like kind of civil a little bit. He wasn't like an ass at all. Like he was being really cool and he was just like, "Oh, I guess you have That's something that we should talk about." Or something. He was like really like proper about it. And then like I being being so immature and like an ass hole >> You had to double down, huh? >> I just doubled down. I was like I was

32 like, "Yeah, good because we ████ should." >> [laughter] >> Oh, ████ >> Because I was just so embarrassed that like like I totally didn't mean for that to happen, but I'm like since it's out I tried to I tried to like half act like I meant to send it. Like like I just was fearless about this opinion or something. And then And then like I guess I kind of was partially a catalyst to why I was more I guess like brave about starting my own thing rather than being on this team because I already ████ it up anyway. >> Yeah, you already crossed the line so you're like, "F███ it." >> And it's like not not to say that like I didn't hide my feelings about that prior. I'm sure that like the other guys knew that I felt like that. They just I never had brazenly put it forward in that way. So it's not like a ████

23 wow, this guy really like they're not like surprised. They're just like, "Oh, damn. That's like you being an ████ about it." >> How long did you guys beef for after that? Uh cuz that I'm sure that didn't end well. >> Well, the the true beef was really about how the team's funds, which we had like won competitions and earned the money, was like in an account, how those just like got depleted was the real beef. >> Uh >> Which is why like we wanted to leave cuz we were like well, we don't want to be in a team that the you know, the funds get mismanaged or just like disappear. Uh so that obviously that takes a higher precedence over just me feeling like they suck. Because that's really the the genesis of how I even joined that team was I was talking ████ about them. So it's not the craziest thing. The the true if I go back even further, I saw

13 this team perform at around 2003 and 2004 when I went to competitions as a spectator. And I every time they came on like me and Aris would be like, "These guys ████ suck." And we would like yell and be like, "They're whack." And we hated them. >> [laughter] >> And then you joined them. >> And then I put in an email. And the way that worked is pretty interesting. It's like a very humbling thing. So I I I hated these guys. I thought they sucked. And then um and then a a guy that I knew joined that team and he's like, "Yo, they're not so bad. It's actually pretty cool." And I was like, "Yeah, right. These guys ████ suck." And then uh one day he's like, "Oh, uh why don't you come to their practice and just like call them out and just like >> See how bad they really suck. >> And I was like, "I'D ████ LOVE TO." >> [laughter] >> AND THEN I GO OVER. He He brings me with him to the practice session that they're

03 having. Uh it's like in Hermosa Beach at some studio. And then um and I get there and like there's like a couple of guys they're like practicing whatever. And then I um one of them comes up to me and it's like, "Hey, what's up, man?" Like and I was like, "Dude, I saw you guys perform. You guys ████ suck. You're whack." Like I was being an ████ like total jerk. And because I wanted to battle them. I was like, "These guys ████ are terrible." And then the um the dude who I said that to was like, "Oh, yeah. I guess maybe you if you want to help us with that, that'd be cool." >> Woah. They were just cool [laughter] the whole time. >> They're just so cool. >> Bro, the ████ nicest guys on the planet. >> Wow. That's so How old are you at this time? >> I was 21, 22. >> Yeah, bro. You're at the We're all at the age where you're just a knucklehead. >> And I was like hothead at idiot. Like I don't know ████ I really don't know

53 ████ And um this dude Richie was just like, "Oh yeah, you want to like uh jump in and maybe like help us make some stuff. Like that'd be cool." >> So cool. >> [laughter] >> Yeah, just so nice. And then I was like, "Uh okay." And then like >> Yeah, but you guys still still suck though. >> And then like next thing you know, I'm like we're like helping workshop some stuff with with like Richie and David and and they're just like, "Yeah, that'd be cool if you just come through and like hang out and stuff." And then like next thing you know, I'm going there like periodically to like >> to tell them how much they suck. >> [laughter] >> to like workshop stuff. Cuz then like Richie's like, "Oh yeah, dude, if we suck, maybe we'll be even better if if you join." Like just so nice. >> Perfect attitude. >> [laughter] >> Just such a nice guy. And then um and then eventually they're like, "Oh, we we have a show coming up. It's Fusion, this

43 like big competition." And they're like, "We have a guy who dropped out and and um that way if you wanted to be in it, you don't have to pay a registration cuz you know that that's I had no money at the time." And they're like, "It'll be free for you if you just want to like be part of it." And I was like, "Dude, yeah." And I >> I'll make the show better cuz I suck so much. >> [laughter] >> And like literally before you know it, like I'm on the team and then uh I brought Hawk on and like we're all just part of this thing now that we're like Yeah, that logic makes a lot of sense. If you think these guys suck and you think you would improve it by being there, then that's the answer. >> I remember that time being so funny because same thing with Vic, he would just be like we would all we would just be like, "Yeah, Six Step. They suck, but you know, it's it's cute. It's cute. You got the one B-boy team that like gets together and like does that in the

33 competition." And Corio's smoking them. It's just one of those like whatever, you know? And so Vic would be like, "Yeah, dude, they suck." And then next thing you know, he's like, "Oh yeah, so I'm joining Sixstep." And we're like, [laughter] "Wait, what?" >> That's crazy. That's awesome. It's like, "Yo, Ryan's on here. Yo, Hawk's on here." I was like, "What?" >> So the boys are on it, dude. >> Cuz once we joined it, uh other people that we knew were like, "Oh, dude, I want to be in it now." And I had explained to them, I'm like, they're like, "Dude, didn't you ████ hate these guys?" And I'm like, "Yeah, but they're nice guys." >> That's why you can't talk ████ huh? >> Like they really were like it really like evened out my like s█████████ because these dudes were like whether skill or not like I loved being with them. Like they were so fun and cool guys. And then uh which is what led me to like once we got to that point where I was talking ████ in the email, we we

23 reached a point eventually where we started to feel like we were progressing and getting better and they weren't like the ████ other 20 of them because they were so nice that like I felt like at the time in my dumb brain, I felt like they were complacent and not like leveling up while like we were always like trying to. Whether that's true or not could be my imagination, but that's how I felt and which is why I started emailing, talking ████ and that got out and then that combined with the funding mismanagement led to uh we had a big meeting. We're like sitting in a circle and then I quit and I was like, "Hawk's also out and if anybody feels like this is s█████ and wants to be in something that isn't, you can come join us." So there like I think like six or seven people from that 20 or whatever

13 ended up coming over and to Quest, yeah. So it was all it was all Quest was almost born as a like a reply to like this ████ sucks. >> So this Sixstep continued and they just kept sucking more? >> No, they continued. I don't I don't know they sucked. He could tell you if they sucked. >> Anthony, do they suck? >> [laughter] >> But they kept doing stuff. They were on like America's Got Talent, like did a bunch of stuff. A bunch of more they got way more members after we left. They kept going. Um but then like eventually like and I and we hated them for so long and then we reached a point later. That nice ass guy who was like super friendly to me, when he was getting married, uh, I had to I went to his wedding and I saw the leader guy again who I had like, you know, who was the reason why the funds got mismanaged and we hated it and we left. I saw him again and I was just like, "Damn, dude, like I I had a different perspective after a while where I was like

04 So, Six Step, the reason it was so cool is that there were a lot of members there that didn't get to go to college or didn't get into college. And, uh, we were competing against people in the collegiate scene. And in a way it was almost like we got to live that college experience that we didn't get. So, like, you know, like I talked to, um, to the leader guy and I was like, "Man, just I never understood what you actually gave us and I I apologize for taking it for granted, yeah." Cuz he cuz the life that we had and the fun that we had and the culture that was created within that team, it's worth so much more than just like ████ $3,000 that disappeared. >> Yeah, what did he say in response to that? >> Oh, it was like a really emotional moment for us, like, yeah. >> Were you guys like crying and stuff? >> Yeah, we were like he was like yeah, it was big. It was huge. And that and that's why like he was at my wedding,

55 you know, like and, um, and so was Richie, the freaking nice guy because I'm like that was like my I think I let my dramatics inflate the issue where like I would also wouldn't have gotten the courage to like do my own thing if it wasn't for what happened. Like I'm like, "You gave birth to everything that everything good that happened to me after that is the catalyst was this." >> It's kind of like bittersweet, huh? It's like it sucked that it had to end that way, but then it gave birth to a bunch of cool stuff, too. >> Exactly. But I I think like because of how I function and the way my brain works, I wouldn't have done it if it wasn't for feeling like somebody had crossed me. >> Yeah. >> You know what I mean? Like that's my response to things is I'm like, "Oh, now I'm going to Yeah, now I'm going to do." But then like it's all imaginary, really. You know, like he They really had no bad intentions. They were They were never malicious against me. I created it in my head to ████

46 survive. That I was like, "This thing's going to be the best. It's going to take everything out because of these guys." But they really the whole time were like, "Damn, man. Sorry to see you go. Like you were our friend." Like they were never like ████ I was ████ beginning to end. >> [laughter and gasps] >> Yeah. So it was funny that like >> To Ryan's credit, I will at least add >> [clears throat] >> he he Yeah, he definitely is an ████ because those guys are really nice guys. >> [laughter] >> Um but to also his credit though, there was a moment, straight up, the whole scene knew that Six Step was just kind of like I said, they're just a B-boy team that comes in, never wins, and it's cute, and it's a little bit of like a It's like an intermission for the show. >> Yeah. They were like the jam, like the darlings of the scene, but yeah. >> Stupid thing to say, but it's like that. And then when they came in, they like won the competition back-to-back type ████ So it was like, "What the f███?" >> So now they're on the board as like contenders.

36 >> More than contenders. Back-to-back. Not a lot of people would win back-to-back back then, too. You you had like maybe three teams that ever done it in history at like Vibe. You guys were like one of the four >> We only won Vibe once. >> Then you won first place at multiple shows that year or some ████ Yeah. They're like cuz we have like a circuit. The choreo scene has a circuit. >> guys can see who's killing it or whatever. >> So like back then, when the scene was a lot smaller, this is like 20 years ago, right? Like only so many teams are even good enough to even be included in these circuits. And then it's like a circuit. If you If you lose this competition, you're still going to see those teams at the next one. You got to beat them then, whether it's like fixing your old show or bringing a new one or something. Like it's all some weird college culture that he he kind of like joined up in. That was just the collegiate scene. >> And I miscredited them because I used to think that like us joining them made them better, and therefore the success is owed at a greater portion to us, but

29 the truth is that the first when we had joined them, the first competition we did with them, we still got last place with us there. It's It's how the leader was able to use us and integrate us into this new format that we were foreign to, and that's why we won. It wasn't like we were just there, cuz we were still ████ losing ████ five last place, like and this is me like off of So You Think You Can Dance and ████ so I already had this like fame and we still got last place. So I'm like, it's not me just being there at all. It's ████ the movement of the chess pieces and understanding like and that's what a good coordinator is. It's like a person that, you know, like he's been coordinator. He knows that it's you can have the most talented guy and it would just go to waste if he's not used properly. So I miscredited that for many years. What?

20 >> [laughter] >> What does that mean? >> It's their mayor, dude. So good. >> But yeah, that's the story of how one email to the wrong people >> Hell of a story. >> made a lot of right moves happen.
