00 The the guy in front of went up before me. He was talking about incest. That's cool. Like how it's his favorite. Americans love that though. Welcome back everybody to another episode of the Careful Boys where we're here again with Joe Wong y'all. Okay. All right. Thank you guys so much. Wait a minute. Why Careful Boys? We have to be careful because Oh, folks. Well, I mean, right now we're kind of like transitioning into the sweat shop era, but there's too much context for that right now. Oh, yeah. Careful, boys. We got to be super careful. We were We were born out of, you know, like the whole co very like sensitive climate. We're scared of what we see. We wanted to be really careful. Oh, okay. We don't get cancelled and anything like that. So, if we tell people we're careful, they know off the jump. So, instead of

52 uh just kidding news, it's right now it's uh be careful news now. Yeah. Be careful. Be careful news. We should call it that now. No risk. Watch out, guys. Be careful news. They're like, "Oh, is it cuz you want to warn the public?" No, we're just carefully reporting the news. We don't want to upset you guys. So, so speaking of being careful, are there like certain topics uh that you're just like, "I'm not putting this into my comedy." Things that are kind of topical now, but like you just won't touch it. Oh, wow. Yeah. Well, it kind of depends on the place, you know. If I'm in the south, I would not do any Trump material. It's just people are very uh Oh, they'll get mad at you. Yeah. Yeah. When I don't talk about my leader like that. Yeah. Yeah. I know. When I was in Houston, you know, like some uh Chinese

44 were trying to boycott my show just cuz uh I said something about Trump doing Asian hate or something. And then I was like, "Okay, fine. If you don't want to come to my show, that's okay." What' you What' you say? Oh, I I just called it Trump virus or something by Trump virus. Trump virus. I got it like a million uh like what do you call these likes or something but then there's some people that didn't quite like but yeah but you know but I still support the the Chinese over there though cuz um it's kind of weird though. I just want to mention one thing because Texas is trying to pass this law that uh bars like uh bars only with I think Chinese and even some Chinese students from owning or even renting property in Texas. Wow. Yeah.

36 Chinese student. I mean Chinese citizens, right? Chinese citizens. And then no, not just them. They're trying to include just Chinese citizens and then try to expand it to Chinese Americans. Yeah. Green card holders. and they want to expand it even more. So that's why they have their protest. So they were they were like, "Oh." And then some people mentioned some activists actually reached out to some of them are even whites, you know, they say, "Oh, can you say something about it on your show?" I said, "Fine." But what I noticed that a lot of audience member don't even care. You know, they're like they're Chinese to come to the show. They they're not up in arms about it at all. and they they don't know which senator is against that bill, you know, just like, okay, well, that's kind of interesting. I mean, I don't mind raising the awareness, but if nobody is

27 nobody really cares about, then it kind of just brings the show to a regional house, you know, so what? So what? Cuz most of them like I can't even afford buying a house anyway cuz everything's so expensive. No, but but then you have to rent one at least. Yeah, you have to have something. But, you know, do do you think that's because like too many like uh Chinese investors or something just like buy property all over America and so it's like more so it's too much? Yeah. Most of downtown LA is owned by Chinese money. Yeah. Do you do you think that's like a I think it's probably like we need to have our own our nation back and have our own the wealth be owned by the Americans. Yeah. Yeah. But then if it starts Yeah. Yeah. But but then if you it starts to expand into, you know, like green card holders or even That's kind of weird. Green card holders. Yeah. Yeah. Well, but yeah.

18 Yeah. I guess that's gray area. That's gray area. Florida already passed it, you know. Just Florida now Texas is uh trying to pass it. That's why, you know, but there there still people are protesting it outside of uh the capital in Austin. Oh, like Chinese people. Yeah, Chinese people. I heard Texas was uh even before that like if you're an out ofstate person they even have rules against out of state investors. There's that too. It's not just Asians. But now this time it's just Asians but for this one. Yeah. This one's just about properties. Yeah. Like in Hawaii you can't be a non- Hawaii resident and then buy a house. You can. Yeah. You have to have there's certain loopholes but you can't just buy it like I'm going just buy it. Oh yeah. Okay. Yeah. You can't just buy it like I'mma just buy it.

09 Yeah. You know what I mean? Because usually you buy it when you just buy it. But you can't do that. I don't know what you're talking about now. But can you go there and get a cup of coffee nowadays? Hawaii. No. If you're not a Hawaiian resident, you have to be like you have to be a little Asian looking. You have to look like you might be a local or something. Yeah. when when you're doing shows with like, you know, other people on the lineup and stuff, uh do you ever see like a common thread of like if they bring up a certain topic, you're like, "Oh ████ here it goes." Like like politics or something? Is it always politics? Oh, not necessarily. Cuz sometimes it's just uh uh I remember when I was in Maine, the the guy in front of went up before me, he was talking about incest. That's cool. What? Like how it's his favorite. Americans love that though. Yeah. A lot of

00 relatable relatable minutes just inside jokes. I was like, "Oh s███." You know the Oh, how they going to laugh at my, you know, car jokes or car jokes. Oh boy, that was really stressful. Oh, that Yeah, sometimes you see people respond to certain jokes. Oh no, I'm screwed here. Yeah. Oh, like the audience likes the hard stuff. Exactly. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. But that but now I have some hard stuff, but then back in those days I didn't have it. I just Yeah. Yeah. I just Oh, no. So, you added some incest stuff to your material. Oh, yeah. Later on at the suggestion of my dear friend. When did you make the pivot? Cuz when I first saw you, it was because you did the one for the at the White House. Oh, okay. And then um I usually don't like

53 wa like watch comedians that have all clean material. So I was like, "Oh, you're actually pretty funny and it's clean." And then um when I would see your clips around, there were never like dirty jokes or anything. It was all clean comedy. Yeah. But they were they were good. It was good comedy. You know, it doesn't have to be dirty. But when did it start changing? I don't know. Oh, I just that uh um I used to not talk about even race that much, you know. Not I mean I joke about being Asian, but I don't uh just take racism head on usually. I just I think things kind of changed uh right before pandemic, you know, just all the Asian hate stuff and I just realized that uh even though every Asian comedian talk about it, but most people

43 don't actually know anything about Asian-American culture at all. Yeah. I still remember once I did a a fundraiser show for Andrew Yang and after the show, one lady came up to me and said, "Oh, thank you so much for uh doing this. I never knew uh there was an exclusion act." They just they just don't know this. Oh, the Chinese one of like 1941 or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. And then she's like, "Oh, I just thought you guys were put into concentration camps." Like, "Oh, wrong wrong Chinese." Yeah, that's not right either. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Because of the exclusion act though, that's why we got to come in. Shout out. Shout out. They're like, "We need a We need We still It's like the Chinese can't come in, but who's going to do all the other jobs?" And he goes, "Oh, the Japanese can come." Oh, really? Don't forget to say thank you. Yeah. Yeah. We

34 hooked you guys up. Thank you, Chinese. You got the contract. Oh, yeah. Did you guys know the uh the San Jose airport full name? It's actually a Japanese name. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah. What's the airport or something? Yeah. The San Jose airport's a Japanese person. Yeah. Yes. Named after a Japanese guy. He I think he was uh probably in the internment camp or something. Just Oh, Meta. Yeah. Manetta. Yeah. It's called the Manetta airport. Yeah. Oh, it's like how ours is like Tom Bradley or whatever. Oh, yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Is this still John Wayne? Is that Santa Ana one? That's Irvine, right? Yeah. Yeah. Santa Ana. John Wayne Airport. John Wayne. Is it international? No, I don't know. John Wayne. Probably not. Yeah, that's And then Bob Hope is the Burbank one. Yeah.

24 But they changed the McCarron Vegas one to Oh, yeah. Harry Reid. Oh. Oh, yeah. I don't even know who both of them are, so I don't care. I don't know who McCarron is. I don't know who Harry Reid is. They should change. Are you serious? Oh, who are they? Oh, he's a senator for a very long time. Who? McCarron or Harry? Harry Reed. Is he good? Honestly, I'm not very familiar with his his politics, but I met him once in Washington DC. He's his guy. I've seen this guy before. Manetta. Yeah. Oh, you saw him before? No, I mean on like on TV and stuff. Oh. Oh. Oh, yeah. Okay. Okay. He's a uh he's been a longtime politician. What up, guys? See you guys there. Say hi to me. name or airport after a casino. That would be bad. Like the MGM airport. Oo, that'd be cool. That would be sick. Yeah. No, I They changed the name of the Harry. You win airport. Yeah. Just name the airport after a certain gambling game. That would be better. Roulette airport. No, no, no. Crap. I thought you win. No, no, no. Cracks international. One that wins a little bit more. Yeah. Yeah. One of the better payouts. Real life's a game. Do you gamble? I used to but yeah, of course you do Chinese majong. I know. Yeah. Oh, no. I

06 I did majong before, but that's just among friends, you know. But uh in Vegas, I just mostly slot machines. I never won anything. So, yeah. But then the Chinese man, they used to have buses that load up the residents from Chinatown and just drive them all up to casinos. I remember that. Oh, yeah. Yeah. the influx of Chinese in general, like in all the casinos now there's all the slot machines are like basically Chinese. Oh yeah, that's like Golden Fortune and the freaking Red Dragon. Yeah. Yeah. Dragon Link. That's the one. Dragon Link is everywhere. People love Dragon Link. They say that's their favorite. It is fun. The bonuses are just And they say they make the most money on Dragon Link. Wow. Mexican guy told me that. Could you believe it? A Mexican playing our games. Yeah. Crazy. But it's something the funny thing is

56 some of the casino bosses even has words like American dream. Good luck trying to realize your American dream in Indian reservation. What? That doesn't even make sense. But that is the American dream. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. It got smaller and smaller. So So you're in you're in Seattle right now? Oh, I I I just did a show in Seattle. Oh, where where do you live? I live in Pasadena. Oh, duh. Yeah. Yeah. Pasadena. Yeah. Percentage wise, how much would you say you're like on the road or like outside of home? Outside of home? I don't know. In a year. Oh, in a year maybe 30 40%. 34. I think he beat you. Oh, you beat me? Yeah. Like in terms of not being in my

46 home? Yeah. I'm probably like at least 50%. 50 at least. Yeah. I told you the other day. Remember when I was like, "This is my first weekend back in Vegas in 2 months." That's true. That's crazy. Wait a minute. You live in Vegas, too? I do, but like I don't. That's what we're talking about. Yeah. My wife does. Uh-huh. Oh. How's that hard for your wife nowadays? Oh, yes. Yeah. Um, she used to travel with me some uh some parts, you know, but now, you know, have a child at home. So, yeah. What happens when you get horny on the road? Do you you jack off in the hotel room? Well, you know, I can't talk about this. Why not? Is it because I'm present? Okay, we can talk about it. I I don't know if you work for the hotels or not. The hotel. They're all mad. They know.

36 Joe, we told you. They know. Stop jacking off in our hotel room. Yeah, I missed your wakeup call. What the actual Joe lands in Nashville. All the hotels are like Joe's here. Joe's here. Hey, don't let this guy stay. No, they're like, get his room ready. I know. This guy will be jacking all over the rooms. I'm not Yeah, I'm not totally sure it's going to be like 30 40% cuz a lot of shows are actually in, let's say, California or, you know, Vegas. So, you just drive? I drive. Yeah. If you have a show in Vegas, you drive. Oh, yeah. I could drive. Yeah. Or Oh, yeah. You drive and then you stay maybe two days drive. Carpool. You know, Carpool is a lot better. Do Do you have a show in Vegas coming up? Oh, no. No. I had I had some shows last year, but Yeah. I will go watch you. Oh, really?

26 Sure. Wait, where do you uh do you also go to like Harris or something like that? No, I I I can't do or the Rio. Is it at the Rio? I did a comedy. That's the Rio, right? No, he does Stratosphere. Oh, wait a minute. No, no. It's probably at the Rio. I I just go do the show. I don't even remember what hotel this I'm staying in, man. But I have to Yeah, man. You do you like Vegas? I love Vegas. Oh, really? Yeah. You I like it, too. You like the I mean, what about the casinos and hotels? My 90 n actually maybe like 90 95% of my life in Vegas has nothing to do with the casino or the strip. Oh, okay. Yeah, cuz there's like the whole suburb side. The suburb. Yeah. So most people they go to Vegas, you drive down like the 15, you see all the lights and

16 you hang out over here. Then there's a whole other side and it's just like a regular city. It's like Irvine or whatever. Oh, really? Yeah. Oh, does it get really hot like Arizona or uh during So it's still good now. So June it gets hot then July and August are like hell hell on earth. And then September goes back to hot. Mhm. And then October is normal. Oh, okay. But when it's normal, it's like nice. Oh, really? Yeah. Vegas is like lowkey extremely nice for like still like five, six months out of the year. Oh. Cuz even when it's like cold sometimes it'll like snow. It's cold. Nice. Yeah. Nice. You got to layer up for real. Oh, really? Versus like California like when it's really cold here, it's like 55°. Yeah. Yeah. I think it's nice like 9 months out of the year.

06 But I have to say the 55 degrees in LA feels colder than 55 in Northeast for some reason. I think it's because of our big dramatic drop cuz it'll be 80° in the winter day and then it'll drop to 55 probably. Yeah. So our body's not acclimated like over there it's like 55 the whole day. Mhm. Oh yeah. Yeah. And maybe 45 at night. I used to live in Boston, you know, like honestly when I was in Boston, 55 degrees in the summer, it was really nice. And you guys remember David Letterman show, right? His whole theater is maintained at 55°. He's the East Coast guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's the We got thin skin here. That's what we're all confused. Like they run hot over there, you know, cuz it's just so cold all the time. You mean uh Boston or Oh, yeah. Well Oh, yeah.

58 Their summer days are pretty hot, too. Yeah. Well, the humidity sucks over there. Well, it's not too bad, you know. They're not as bad as You like the east coast? Oh, east co Oh, I love it. What's better, East Coast, West Coast? Oh, uh, weatherwise, I feel West Coast is much better. ████ weather just in general. In general, cuz uh I don't know. As a comedian, I still like like in New York better than than LA because of the city, the crowd, the culture. Yeah, the crowd. Yeah, the crowd's better. Oh, the crowd's better. Also, it's just so condensed. Everything is so close. I can't easily do five, six shows a night. Oh, cuz you're walking the train. Yeah, the train. But in LA, the most I did was four shows a night. And by the time I got to my fourth show, uh, the show's over. I'm not even kidding. I drove to the fourth show and the guys like, "Oh

50 my god, you know, we just missed you." And then the host, she's like, she said to the crowd, "You guys want to see another act? Joe just arrived." People just say, "Sure." Then they stayed another 20 minutes. But then I would never do that again, though. It was like just so hard to get from one place to another. Yeah. Would you say East Coast likes your jokes more or West Coast likes your jokes more? Uh, I would say East Coast cuz East Coast I don't know why cuz uh I actually I did the same set one set in the comedy seller in New York, another set in at the L factory. Yeah, you can you can just tell the the reaction. It's just just hotter on the East Coast or they you think it's more intellectual like they're smarter on that side and they get things faster

40 or maybe Yeah. Or maybe here in LA they like uh you know louder acting out more more animated. Yeah. More animated I guess. Yeah. So there is that that difference there. Where is there more like sensitive ████ New York or LA? Oh sensitive ████ Oh yeah. It's got to be LA. It's got to be. Yeah. I think it's probably LA.
