00 The worst advice I ever got from my dad was I called him up and I'm like, "Hey, uh yeah, so I I want to ask Nikki to marry me and I want to get permission from her father, obviously." >> [snorts] >> And my dad was like, "Yeah, do not do that." >> What? >> Yeah, do not ask permission from her father. >> But isn't that the respectful thing to do? >> Right. And so I'm like, "What are you talking about, old man?" I'm like, "If >> Old man. >> If I call him old man. If he doesn't like me, I need to figure this out with him before >> he didn't become part of their family. >> Yeah. >> So like, but I think I'm a lot more direct than my old man is cuz he's more of like a >> avoid conflict guy. >> introverted >> Oh, so he's just like, >> [clears throat] >> "If he doesn't say no, you don't have to deal with you could just get married." >> I think that my dad just likes to yell at like McDonald's employees and stuff like that. I don't think he likes to face like real ████ >> Did Did he have to ask?

51 Did he ask have to ask for uh >> Yeah, isn't that >> Did he have to ask my grandfather? >> Yeah. >> I I don't think he did. >> Oh, wow. >> He just like straight-up cuz my parents met on a blind date and then my dad met his her dad pretty quick after that and I think he just >> Did he even propose? >> He proposed to her in an elevator, yeah, at a hospital. >> Was it more like That's crazy. Why there? >> My uncle My uncle Mark got into a radical motorcycle accident. I don't know what else to call it. He like ████ flipped his his bike into a 7-Eleven. >> Insane. Holy ████ >> And like got had to get a bunch of screws in his knee and my dad was planning on proposing to her at that time, so he just said, "F███ it. We'll do it in the elevator." He's a really romantic guy. >> [laughter] >> We're already here. >> So maybe it's one of those like, "Hey, this elevator's nice." >> [laughter] >> It goes up, it goes down. I like that. Carpet. I like the music. >> Uh ignorant 101, the whole asking a

43 father for permission thing, is that like a >> It's a respect thing. >> No, I know that. I mean >> Is it across all cultures? >> Yeah, was that Where did that originate? >> I have no idea. I think it's like chivalrous or something. >> I almost feel like it's international, no? To like cuz it's especially the dad because it feels like the dad was the one's protector and then you're passing your daughter off to another man or protect I always thought it was a >> Mom people be kidnapping. >> I think that's a bare minimum these days cuz the other one the other version of that is like a dowry. >> Just dowries and ████ >> Right or it's like I got 25 grand I'm going to marry your daughter. >> That's a bare minimum right? Like like I feel like everybody's everybody has to right? >> way, that was a ████ swish. If I did not do that I would be absolutely mud to the old man. >> Nikki's dad was so happy. >> Nikki's dad yeah he was so happy and he told Darcy Nikki's mom that like

35 that was tight of me to do. >> He's a solid guy. >> Yeah yeah yeah like good guy. >> So he you're you would have fumbled hard if you listened to your dad. Yeah. >> Did you know he was kind of but like you kind of knew he was going to say yes type like that? >> I didn't know. I had no idea. I I we me and him got on really well and Nikki said that I'm the only guy that he ever liked that that she brought home like ever in the history of the relationship which was a tight ████ leg up. >> Was it the sports? >> I think it's just that I'm respectful. >> You made an effort. >> I always shook his hand when I'd go into his house cuz my mom drilled that into me very young. If you go to somebody's house you have to say hi and bye to whoever's house it is. And I always you know called him sir and ████ like that. And I think just base level respect ████ and then also I ████ dig the Dodgers. I he I love the NFL. Me and him kick it talk about ball all the time. So yeah it's

25 >> That's important. You guys collect nutcrackers? >> We do we well I I copied him cuz he has a big nutcracker collection. So I was like we're going to start one in our house and so every year I get a new nutcracker. I'm catching up with the guy. Plus I know that when he dies I'm getting his ████ nutcrackers. >> [laughter] >> It's going to be a huge leg >> You remind him every day you see him. Hey remember when you die I'm getting those nutcrackers. >> I'll give him a nutcracker for Christmas and I'll be like I'll be taking that back in like 20 years. >> [laughter] >> So it would have been a total disaster if you followed >> Total disaster. Total disaster. And me and her family are tight, and I don't think that would have happened if if not for that. Yeah. Would have been a snub. I would have He would have felt snubbed. >> For sure. >> And instead, like when I'm in Hawaii, he's all giddy. Like he's like the ████ most excited person there when I was like proposing to Nikki cuz he was also in Hawaii with us. And uh he he >> So, he had the big support because you

17 included him in the >> And he never told anybody. Yeah. That's the coolest thing. I know if I tell that cat something, and I'm like, "You got to keep it between us." He will do it. >> if you listen to your dad, and you're like just proposing in Hawaii, and he goes, "WHAT THE F███?" >> YEAH. >> [laughter] >> WELL, NO. YOU KNOW WHAT'S FUNNY IS MY DAD also gave me bad advice about that. He's like, "Don't bring the diamond. He's like, don't bring the diamond cuz you you might not get through SECURITY AND S███." >> [laughter] >> WHAT? >> OH, THAT'S WHY YOU HID IT, RIGHT? >> YEAH. YEAH, I hid it. >> Like he thought you were going to have a like a diamond heist or something or like >> Thought that the TSA was going to confiscate it or some ████ like that. >> You're not going to ████ Mexico or something. >> Going between the United States. It's still the United States. >> No, regardless if you're going to Mexico. >> It's a ring. >> Yeah. >> [laughter] >> It's not an explosive ring. >> No, but like he's he's thinking about the the guards stealing it from him. >> Yeah, like shady guard. Like shady police. Corrupt guard.

08 >> And I was like, "Dude, it's going to be on my person. They're going to have to ████ beat it off of me, you know what I mean?" >> going to have it You're going to have it on your pinky. >> Yeah. [laughter] So, but I was like, "Yeah, I'm not I'm proposing in Hawaii, actually, old man. I'm proposing in ████ Hawaii." >> That's dope, man. >> You're wack. >> [laughter] >> The The worst advice I ever got was before I moved to LA and really decided to do stand-up seriously. My grandma She said she stayed up all night, and she prayed to the gods, and she saw me. She's like, "I The gods told me do not move." >> [laughter] >> I THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO SUPPORT YOU. >> NO, don't move to LA. You have a job in Utah. You know, s███'s going fine. Don't do stand-up. >> Man, that's rough. >> You have a job in Utah. Beautiful Utah. >> [laughter] >> Yeah. >> You're set for life. >> What was the job in Utah? >> I worked I did like social media for this like startup.

58 >> Was it the OnlyFans thing? >> Uh a different one. >> Oh, okay. >> Different OnlyFans. It was a startup called Facebook. >> [laughter] >> I love how she was like >> Got ████ out of that one. >> I consulted the oracle and the oracle say don't go. >> Don't move. You're going to fail. >> After she told me she just was going to miss you, dude. >> Hey, the older I get, the more useful that's starting to make sense with all his stories too about ████ like fortune telling and ████ It's like when like as a parent, if you want to say something to your kid, but you're like, man, I don't want to say it's my fault. Oh, the gods said. >> [laughter] >> They just make it up. I prayed all night and they said this. You know what I mean? >> It's a total move. >> That's so sick. I'm going to hell abuse that. >> It only works till they're it like they're old enough to be like I suddenly understand religion. >> Yeah. >> It works, dude. >> Holy crap. >> We could control a lot of people.

49 >> Oh my god. >> Jesus says to me don't go out past midnight. >> Yeah. He's like >> You ever You ever rub it in your grandma's face? I get booked all the time, ████ >> [laughter] >> No, I mean she's like, yeah, I can go She doesn't think I'm, you know, she still sees me as like a whatever. >> Does she go, you're not Kevin Hart. She goes, you're doing you're you're doing a stand-up. Are you the headliner? >> She can have fun, you know. >> Does she go to your shows and boo the whole time and ████ >> She I came to one show. I did a show in Utah and she came. >> Does she understand English though? >> Um barely. >> She goes, I don't know what he's saying. >> So she's just there just to support, just to listen. >> She's like, oh, your face was funny. >> Wow. >> She said, you made great faces up there. >> [laughter] >> But she's just like he's he'll be he'll be back. >> Actually, the one time she went she's like, oh, but the black guy. >> He's very good. >> He's very good. You should learn from

40 him. >> Did that like Did that like mean a lot to you when she said that or were you just like you're crazy? >> Oh like I shouldn't move? >> Yeah. >> I was kind of like I I already put a deposit down on a place. >> It's too [laughter] late. >> Like I it's happening. Not like it's >> What would have happened if you went, "Grandma, you're right. You get the deposit you just leave the deposit and you just stay in Utah. What would happen?" You would just be working at your dad's nail salon? >> I probably would, yeah. Keep working at this company, but then I learned after when I came back that the company they laid off more than half of the people and it's kind of on the down now. And like I would have not had that job anymore and then I probably would have had to go back to pre-med become a doctor. >> And you never know, dude. Maybe if you worked there, you were the reason why the company would have blew up, had a sick ass IPO, you'd be ████ stock options galore. I don't know. >> I probably would be rich.

30 >> [laughter] >> But now I have less money, but >> So you're telling me you would have been a doctor if you just stayed in Utah and >> Yeah, his fallback is >> your grandma was right. >> Yeah, if the company if the company's stock options don't work because it fails, his fallback is being a doctor. >> Right, but I wouldn't have have met you guys. >> Are you are you even good at school though? You think you'd be a doctor? >> I tried I was pretty good, but then um chemistry I tried chemistry and then I stopped showing up cuz it was so hard. >> Yeah, chemistry is You're not going to be a doctor, dude. >> Yeah, probably not. >> It's so ████ hard, so much ████ studying. It's just ████ >> Yeah, I probably would. >> a chiropractor, dude. >> Yeah, yeah. That's the way out. That's the way >> Yeah, your your grandma was right though. >> [laughter] >> I mean I think I would have made more money if I stayed cuz I had I had no expenses obviously if I stayed there. >> What did your grandma do for a living? >> She works at a just a factory thing. >> I feel like she's got to love that

20 you're doing what you you're doing then. That's like Come on. >> think they ever wake up like that. You're more deeper than a lot of people are, dude. >> You don't think so? >> No way. I think she's like, "This is how it is." You know what I mean? Like people work at factories and like you don't chase your dreams. >> Yeah, they probably just see next the two levels up. So she's probably like, "You need to be a factory supervisor cuz that person has it made." >> very true. >> Right? Like that. >> Well, she ain't wrong still. >> No, but that but but she doesn't >> But he would he wouldn't be smashing puss if he was a factory supervisor. >> She's not coming around to "Oh, he's chasing his dreams." It's never going to happen. >> She's looking at him like >> I understand >> I don't know he's a clown. >> Maybe that's the as long as she sees him happy, that's all, right? Like I'm trying to be optimistic here. >> Jesus Christ. >> if I'm like Kevin Hart if I'm like way bigger and she sees me on TV and movies, I'm like, "Oh, okay." >> TV's everything, dude. My mom was not

11 giving me any love until I was on TV. >> She'd be like, "Oh, I like that black guy, Kevin Hart. I like that Kevin Hart [clears throat] guy." >> He's funny, yeah. >> My mom didn't give me love cuz I was on TV. It's never that ████ direct. My mom gave me love because her friends' kids saw me on TV and then they talked to her, so then her friends were like, "Oh my god." So then she had to claim that she knew it the whole time. >> Yeah, the co-signing, that's important. >> You need a co-sign. >> Yeah. >> You got to go find some other ass grandma. >> Pay a grandma that works at your grandma's factory to be like, "Your grandson, he's famous." >> Yeah, and then if that grandma's like, "I wish I'd never had a factory life." I don't know why she got that accent, like she's southern. >> She yeah, she's from the prairie. >> She's like, "Yeah, yeah. I don't know. Never wanted that factory life. I always wanted to be a comedian just like your son." >> Yeah. >> [laughter] >> "You must be proud." "Will Pepper, how

01 did you get that last name?" >> [laughter] >> My mom said she's proud for the first time. >> Yeah, wow, that's huge. >> She was just like I was like cuz I was like, "Yeah, man, I like my s███'s expensive in LA and stuff." She's like, "Yeah, but you you know, it's been like almost 6 years and you're still pursuing your dreams." Like you didn't give up yet. >> That's some dedication, yeah. >> Yeah, she's like, "So I'm pretty proud." >> That must be sick. Nobody hated my YouTube videos more than my mom. >> She what? But she watched them though. >> She watched them and she's like, "Steven. Oh, Steven." >> That's cuz of your content, though. >> [laughter] >> That's like That's what makes it clear that your mom's a great mom. >> Yeah, fair. >> It's like some freaky horny stuff? >> Not freaky horny stuff. >> [laughter] >> Kind of. >> I mean, we don't have to go into it, but my mom was not a fan. >> That's crazy. >> He was having sex in public. >> He pushes the boundaries on stuff.

51 >> Yeah, a little bit. >> Hey. >> I'll never say it again, but Steve's a legend. You should actually look up Steve Green Comedy on YouTube and I think you're going to have a great time. >> He does have that kind of video. >> It's absolutely true. I think you'll actually have a great time. >> My my mom will say that she's proud of me, but she will never specify how. >> Just cuz you exist? >> Yeah, it's like that. >> But she can't figure out how why. [laughter] >> Won't exactly nail it down. But I'm again, I'm glad that my parents are like this because I don't think I would have made it long without chips on my shoulder from something. >> Yeah. >> You know. >> Yeah, man. I just think that my whole life's been full of bad advices that I just blocked out any advice my parents gave me. >> Like they would be like, "Man, uh my mom and my my stepdad, I remember they were like, you know, the reason why um your ex your your girlfriend is is is mad at you is [snorts] because she's not

42 pregnant yet." >> [laughter] >> And I was like, "We're not even married." And they're like, "I know, but women want babies." And then my mom was like, "I wanted a baby when I was younger. And I and I I was just waiting for your father like, hurry up." And I'm all like, "You guys are ████ ████." >> Yeah, that's crazy, yeah. >> Like, there's just so many things like that over the years of my life. Like even in high school. I was like, um the cool thing is, okay, they didn't do the whole like, you need to have a stable job thing, right? But they they did reverse psychology on me. They're like, "Find what you love." They did that whole ████ Just I had I didn't I >> It's cuz your dad was an artist, right? >> Yeah. They're like, my and their parents were like, >> How was that reverse? >> Yeah, so they reverse psychology'd me. >> How was that reverse? You told me cuz they made it lame. >> Yeah.

32 >> Oh. >> Cuz your parents was giving you advice. They didn't live by good example. I will I looked at them. I was like, I'll never be a ████ artist. You guys always have bill collectors calling the house. You guys can't manage your money. You paid played piano and your my dad's neurotic and I have never things ever perfect enough. He's just like, this is not the perfect art, you know. >> Cuz that's Joe in his underwear playing piano all the time. >> Yeah. >> Playing chopsticks the whole time. >> And then like it just made me not want to like do that. Like, oh, what pursue my passion? What the ████ I'm going to make money. ████ you guys, you know. And then later I just apple, you know, doesn't fall far from the tree. >> Then he started selling piranhas. Rest is history. >> Yeah, but damn, dude. I feel like some people just should not listen to their parents. Like I hear the ████ that some people's parents say, I'm like, damn, no wonder

22 dumb breeds dumb, dude. Yep, and that was me. >> My dad used to play lottery all the time and he his his whole thing was like, can't win if you don't play. >> That's actually very true, but stupid. >> So you can't ████ win. Like come on. He's he's stealing from Wayne Gretzky cuz that's his ████ line. >> It is his line. It's just a little bit different. >> But see I didn't know it came from Wayne Gretzky. That's like Nikki's dad told Nikki when she's growing up that he made up the In-N-Out song. >> What the hell? >> ████ with [laughter] her. And then she's at school and she's like, oh, my dad made that song. And everyone's like, what the ████ are you talking about? >> [laughter] >> It made her look ████ >> [laughter] >> Yeah, my dad wrote that. >> That's my dad.
