06 Welcome back to another episode of Careful Boys. We got my man Nick done. >> Nick done. >> Done. Nick, we got our dude Jason Channy. >> All right. What is a time that you got the work balance thing wrong and messed up? >> You mean like work life balance? >> Life balance. I missed the word life. >> Work balance. >> Yeah. the work life balance, you know, like that's probably the hardest part in terms of relationships in order to like make sure it's a healthy balance between like work and life. What's the time you can remember being like, I messed that up. I did too much of one or the other. >> I think I didn't mess it up, but me and Hannah are very extreme where like when we first got together, everything was just all life. There was no work together. >> Oh, yeah. That's right. That's when you were going and took

56 >> Yeah, that's that's the dream though, right? That was hell of fun. But what we realized is it lacked purpose. >> It lacked cuz we were we're not even at retirement age. And then we still had that like fire in us to do something. >> Yeah. >> And then when we went to Hawaii, it became there was a time where it became all work because it's just so much to do. >> Right. [clears throat] >> And then um >> that one was pretty rough. >> But then now I feel like there's a little bit more of a balance. We would just like to replace maybe the type of work we do. >> Mhm. >> Yeah. And I think that would be cool. That's that that'll be a pretty sweet spot. But we both genuinely enjoy >> working. >> So that doesn't I don't think it would ever change. >> Oh, okay. What do What How do you know like when let's say that you feel like it's becoming too much work? What do you actually do to like say balance it out?

48 You're like, "Hey, we got to like go take a trip somewhere." Like what's the way that you like >> Well, I think the type of work we all do is freelancing and business, right? So sometimes you can't put a halt on priorities like you got to process these orders. You got like just there's no one else to do the job. >> Close the shop. >> You can't. Right. So just be when I start sensing that all of our conversations are just business and we're starting to look at each other as like business partners and not romantic lovers. >> Cuz I'll treat her I'll start to treat her more like a dude. Oh yeah, >> I'll start I things will start coming like words will come out like bro like we need to do X Y and Z and I'm like >> kissing her. [laughter] >> Start smacking her on the ass more. She's like start kissing on her neck when she's washing dishes. [laughter]

39 >> Hey, good job, bro. >> When there's no when there's no more sweetness and we're just trying to logically approach each other, we talk like that. It [clears throat] puts me in a mind state of partners fixing the problem versus like Yeah. And then I think she's really good at noticing how to balance the moments with kisses and hugs and still being sweet >> and it's like resetting and ████ and we're stressed but we don't >> stress each other out. That's the that's the that's the thing that keeps us kind of like >> hey we don't we don't take it out on each other because this ████ pissed me off on a business meeting. >> You're in on it together. This >> Yeah. We're like ████ them. No, ████ them. Right. And then like Yeah. So, I think that that's super helpful. And then for me, it was noticing the balance of like being spontaneous of like, oh ████ this is going down, but hey, let's

30 go do a night swim and then let's just play and not talk about anything else or like um just small moments if you can't have a whole day. >> And I think that's the that's the best balance that we got going on right now. Yeah. >> Let's go surfing. That's what he said. >> Let's go. Let's go surfing. >> She's like, "Okay, let's go surfing." >> And she's good at like >> big waiver. [laughter] >> She needs She needs She knows we got to do something. So, she'll be like, "Hey, there's nothing happening for the first three hours this morning. So, let let's just let's just go to a like cool little breakfast spot." >> Yeah. Or whatever. Yeah. >> That's a good way of doing it. That's nice. >> And we'll we'll talk about normal ████ I think that's a key. >> Oh, yeah. stop talking >> together like is just on top of your mind. So all you do is talk about >> the priorities at work

21 >> and then I don't want to talk about a broken ice machine >> employees. I don't >> talk about employ like I don't want to ████ talk about them. I don't ████ >> What's normal ████ >> Normal? >> Yeah, normal ████ Like when you said you have a goal, >> hobbies, >> your friends outside of work, your family, >> you know, like life go like goals outside of monetary goals like, oh, I want to learn Japanese. That's super important cuz I can >> be super consumed in my goals and work >> that I realized that before I thought like I just want to talk about that all day, >> but then it's so important to like balance it out and just talk about >> other ████ Just be people again. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, >> that's that's a big one. And having friends that aren't entrepreneurial, that's helpful, too. Cuz I used to think like, man, y'all ████ boring. Like, you just talk about water cooler ████

13 >> but then it's hella important >> to have interesting 9-5 friends, meaning like they're great storytellers >> cuz they they exist, right? >> Yeah. And it's it's like all the dynam like if they could tell a good story, the boring ████ becomes entertaining because they could they could really like bring you through a journey of like their dynamic with their parents. >> And it's like I don't need a story about like how you you're a ████ royal and then you had to marry because like your your king father made you. Like that's interesting, right? >> Yeah. This Princess Diaries, dude. [laughter] >> Yeah. But like a regular friend can also like provide that as well >> if they're really good storytellers. >> Yeah. >> But yeah, stuff like that. Yeah.

03 >> What about you? >> How do you work life balance? >> How do you adjust your >> your relationship? Yours is has an extra layer >> of toughness because you're traveling so much. [laughter] So when you when you come back like when you come back I feel like you it's not like you get to have to be you have to reset the rapport a little bit before you can even enter into the relationship again like what >> I do I said hello >> he just takes his shirt off [laughter] >> Jason >> I am Jason >> nice to meet you all over again >> I think that was really important the because that's why I asked you what's like a normal thing because um I talk about family like u maybe a hobby thing like exercising thing cuz I just because a lot of the times um we talk she would talk about her work and then I'll talk about my work and then we talk about the

53 kid, you know, but if we talk about our kid too much, >> you talk ████ about that ████ You know that ████ ████ the other day and after that ████ pissed right after I had to change her again. >> Yeah. And she's ████ >> Yeah. >> She's two and a half. ████ her, man. >> Oh. Oh, you know what's wrong? That's cool. >> What's what's I think a really important rule is to is to stay away from struggle bonding. Don't struggle bond. Yeah. Like like um >> Oh, we don't struggle bond. >> It's easy to bond through complaining with people. >> So, cuz everyone does it and it's easy to get sucked into it cuz it's actually pretty interesting to hear people's like misery, >> right? So, like that's really important not to struggle bond with your wife >> cuz then um if y'all like >> talk too much ████ and complain that becomes your thing. >> Yeah. Then like you get together just to talk ████ about your work and everything

44 and your whole world becomes miserable. >> I think that's really so important. But I I try to think about cuz she doesn't complain. >> Oh, that's good. That's good. >> I And I think I complain more than she does. [laughter] >> What do you complain about? >> No. No. I rar Okay. You're really mad. >> No, I'm just cur [laughter] tone was crazy. The tone was crazy. You're right. You're right. >> I don't know where that was coming from. >> No, cuz in my head a great life. Why the ████ is he complaining? that in my head I don't see you as a complainer at all. That's why I was like, "What do you complain about?" >> I rarely >> tell me what you complain about. >> Tell him. Tell him. >> Tell me. [laughter] >> Like his flight was too long or some ████ I don't know that he couldn't work. >> No, I I I really, you know, mostly is like, "Oh, f███." Like I try to do my best, you know, like >> Oh, stand up >> with Yeah. And with money or whatever the thing is. Okay. With money. But like

35 [laughter] there's no whatever the thing is. It's just right and then go ahead I'm do my best and then you know like that stuff I'm not complaining like what the you know it's more like oh ████ I'm ████ trying you know like let's let me do the thing but besides that um yeah besides that I uh wait what was the oh we're pretty positive like what you guys talk about >> I I'm really I try to be grateful a lot of the like every day I would say like hey I'm really happy that we're doing this really grateful that we're doing this together um even though but sometimes I lash It's not nice. ████ How are we going to get We're going to have no furniture. [laughter] >> That's That's normal. >> I got to go on the ████ road. I got no furniture. We have money for >> shows. So I can buy you a countertop. >> Do you want warm water or no? [laughter] >> I want to go.

26 >> If you go to Desire Industries, you can get a couch for $40. Yeah. Yeah. >> I know a good thrift shop thrift store. >> That would be really nice. I appreciate that. >> Desert Industries. Check it out. We found a really sick like like a what do you call this? Single corner. Okay. $25. >> Be there if you tell everybody about it. >> Yeah, dude. Really good deal. >> I'm trying to hook up. Hey, dude. >> Thank you. >> Off camera. >> Off camera. Tell them. >> Don't go to ████ Ashley, dude. They rip you off. >> Yeah. >> Don't do the financing, dude. >> Dude, I never do finance. >> Zero down is a trap, dude. It's a ████ trap. Don't be those people that spend thousands of dollars on a couch. >> Yeah, that'd be crazy. >> When you could get it for $30. How do you manage the pressure of knowing that that um you have to leave a lot and that might take a toll, you know, like the balance feels like it's always going to be like that, right? >> Yeah. I I think she handles it really really well. I'm usually the one coming

18 back lashing out, >> beating yourself up over it. >> Well, what I I come back and then she's like, "Oh, you're always really mean the the first like 5 hours." >> Wow. Really? >> Because I have to readjust. >> Oh, >> I I think like cuz she's always saying that You do you go in the door throw your bag? >> No, no, no, no. Mean as in like like sometimes I would roast her >> as a joke, but I think >> still doing crowd work. [laughter] >> I still do. >> That's your love language. So you you actually missed her. So you don't know how to channel it properly. >> What What kind of roast do you say? [laughter] >> I uh like do you comb your hair today? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. ████ like that. ████ like that. >> Hey, look. Get a load of this chick right here. [laughter] You're going somewhere. Go to the bathroom again. >> Screw it, lady. No [laughter] hugs and kisses. Just ████ roasts burnt to a crisp. >> She's trying to give me a kiss. I'm >> He comes home. Whoa. Did you gain

09 weight, [laughter] >> dude? >> No. You want to kiss me? You You're gay, dude. [laughter] >> No, but cuz Okay. And this is another thing I do. >> Hours of that. [laughter] >> She's like, "Why are you ████ mean?" >> It's the Jason cool down period. >> It's just like, "All right, go ahead, man." Right. [laughter] Yeah. And I I do feel bad. But the thing is, this is another thing I do because I do travel and it it's hard to leave. It really is. This job, baby. And when I leave, I try to like block them out >> like cuz I heard a lot of people do that cuz they I can't be thinking about them all day. >> Yeah. I can't. Yeah. Then then it affects my ████ And uh Yeah. So then but so I think when I come back it's an adjustment period to be like >> otherwise you'll go on stage you'll be like anyone else miss their family [laughter]

59 yeah >> the road is really lonely. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> I wish they could travel with me. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> It'd be a pretty You know what if your if your wife was like a a practical joker. It would be funny if she just kept replacing your kid with a different girl to see if you noticed [laughter] every time you come home. >> That would be crazy. >> And you're too scared to be like, "Is that the same?" [laughter] Like you're too scared to be like, "Uh, >> a lot. [laughter] >> She looks Latina today." >> Have you ever Have you ever done that where you're like, "Ah, I got an offer to do this really long gig, but I don't know if it's right to take it at this time." And you just like don't >> That's another B. That's such a good question because sometimes I'm like, oh, I I take a lot of gig for money and also

50 uh sometimes it's just, oh, I got to work on a set, but sometimes I'm like, oh, but I do did all this cuz eight out of 10 shows is not good is work. Not for all comics is just it's work. >> It's Yeah, you're working your material. Yeah, >> you're working your material. You're working a crowd because two out of 10 is like one out of 10, two out of 10 is fine. Either way, it's just a easy, you know what I mean? Like a stand up is fine. But uh but sometimes I I I go, "Oh, I've never been to this place." Financially, it may be just a little bit, but should I go, you know, and then >> get your name out over there? So, it's more of like a different type. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Is it >> monetary gain, but it helps with exposure or whatever? >> One time is personals. >> One time is personal. [laughter] >> It's personal. >> Like personal like, oh, I want to go there because I really want like I went

40 to Australia. We're going to see this waterfall. So, I'm going to go there and do the show. >> I wanted to go to Ohio. >> Why? >> Just to check it out. >> Oh, it was a >> personal thing with Ohio. >> With Ohio, >> Canton love. >> I never been to Australia and I really wanted to go, but the money was just like because of the duration I was going to go and I felt bad, but I was like, and a lot of the times I wish like she could come, you know? >> That's the hard part. >> So, did you end up go you end up going or >> I end up going? >> It went really great though. It went great and uh I mean uh yeah but also the time away from her feel but >> uh two and a half weeks three weeks. Yeah. But um >> that is a long time. >> A long time. Yeah, man. Yeah.
