05 Welcome back to another episode of the Careful Boys, y'all. Hey, what's a treat that your guys' family had growing up that later you realized when you were like eating this this food treat, you're like, this is actually some poor ghetto ████ A struggle meal? It was just wrapped as a treat in your childhood. >> My grandma used to get hot dogs and get like Wonder Bread and wrap it around Saran Wrap. And it just [snorts] have We'll just have like a bunch of those in the refrigerator. >> That does sound kind of good, though, actually. My Louisiana buddy calls it redneck power bars. So it's a thing? Cuz he would have him and his brother are both 300 lb, like big like football player type. So they would eat the whole kitchen. So to keep the kitchen stocked, the mom would make hundreds of them and just stock them in the fridge. When they come home, they could just grab them. >> Yeah, maybe it was a thing back then. That was normal. >> Piggy in a blanket, but like huge.

57 Yeah. It's like the the actual huge pig, not a piggy. That's crazy. >> I remember thinking sardines was fancy. Really? >> Yeah. >> Is it not fancy? I don't think so. Maybe cuz it's kind of like caviar. It's in the Yeah, I think when I was a kid, I was like, oh, this is like not LIKE ANYTHING ELSE. >> [laughter] >> YEAH, cuz I would get sardines like if I was doing something good. So I'd be like, It was a treat? That's what That's what he's talking about. Yeah, the stuff that's like you're not eating it every day, but then you get given it and you think it's special cuz you're ████ So I was just like, oh damn, sardine day? >> You know, mine was kind of opposite. Like I knew we were poor and then we had poor choices and zero snacks. But then my mom was such a ████ nutritionist or like like self-ordained nutritionist that she'd be like, "Look what I

48 bought." And it'd be like some ████ nectar of cactus or something, right? And she's like, "I spent $500 on this s███." I'm like, "Are you sure we can afford that?" And then she would make me drink like a tablespoon of it everyday. What the hell? >> And then there's like ████ that no one else ever has ever [laughter] tasted. >> Hey, to be fair, a lot of people do claim you're like the buffest biggest Asian there. Yeah, it might have something to do with it. Or maybe it has to do with GNC and I buy whey protein. You remember Oddjob from Goldfinger? That's the only buffer Asian I can think of. >> [laughter] >> The guy throws his hat. Yeah, the guy throws his hat. That's the only guy. That guy was like a convicted like sex offender. Oh boy. Fits fits. >> It's a very tragic tale that guy. >> Oddjob fits that. Yeah. [laughter] Did you write a song about it though? No, I should My house it was uh it was definitely tuna fish casserole. I don't know if you

38 guys ever had that. Sounds white as ████ >> Yeah, it's white as ████ >> it at my white friend's house. You thought that was a treat? Oh my god, it was like so nice. Yeah, it was like dang, tuna fish casserole night, let's ████ go boys. And then I had like peas on top of it and ████ It was not like yeah, later on it's like oh that's that's white trash ████ for sure. Oh, for me it was TV dinners. I was like ooh, TV dinner night, we're ████ eating good tonight dude. Because um do you remember when Hungry Man came out with a dessert portion where if you peel that part it makes a brownie? So I'm like bro, cuz I didn't have dessert like with every meal. So that was fancy. That was like luxury. Did all of you guys have McDonald's as a treat as a kid like you didn't get it all the time? What was the frequency that you were allowed >> McDonald's. It was when my mom had like a trip or was out of town visiting

28 family so my dad was just like we're doing McDonald's tonight. >> Oh, only when your mom's not there? That was it was 99% my father's. How often was that? Maybe like once every 3 weeks. Oh, I okay, we had it once every 2 weeks. No more than that. So every other Friday we could have McDonald's. You remember how how often you had Cuz that was a rule. It was that way the whole time. How what? >> Did it have to be the fillet of fish? Oh, we never had the I never had fillet of fish. >> Oh, ████ I didn't either. We just got happy meals or whatever. >> Do you remember when they had 29 cent cheeseburgers? >> That's life, yeah. Those babies. 29 cent hamburgers. >> So, we would we would go every Sunday after church. We had to go to church to get the McDonald's. >> And they would max out, you could only buy 20 at a time because all the church moms or all the like scout moms or whatever, sports moms, they would just go out there for the meals. So, I remember every line it was just like a Asian lady in front of me getting 20

18 hamburgers. And they would just put it on the fold-out table at the games. Mine was every Tuesday. Every Tuesday? >> dad because my parents are divorced, so I think he was trying to buy my love. Dude, that's sad. He bought it. >> Every Tuesday is Every Tuesday is very often. >> Dive more into the perks of divorce. [laughter] And then my mom was anytime we wanted to walk 3 miles to go get it cuz she didn't believe in driving on the weekends. Wait, what's wrong with weekend driving? She just felt like we should walk more. So, she had Oh. >> So, you know we live on uh I don't know if you remember, but like Carmenita and Artesia. >> Yep. >> You know what that is? Yep. You know the other McDonald's on the other side on South Street and Carmenita? I do. >> We would walk, it might be 5 miles to be honest, and me and the my mom and a ████ like ████ 10-year-old would walk 5 miles to go eat McDonald's and

09 then walk back. >> the Cerritos library? No, it's by the uh it's closer to where like La Palma is. Damn. >> Like Carmenita and South Street. Yeah, my mom's nuts. She just has crazy ideas. Is worth it? >> As a kid, walking 5 miles? Yeah, that's true. You know what I'm saying? You're like But then on the way back, you're like, "What the ████ dude?" >> that's true, yeah. But that's smart for like health reasons, though. It's pretty good. It's a good idea. >> We burned it off. >> Asian walks. It's good. I I do remember I do feel like especially in that era, coupons were like the thing that dictated our like meals. I don't think it was ever like a choice. I think it was just like what's on sale would be like the thing that would be on the menu. >> Always Yoshinoya. And the best treat for us would be you know how like at our dry cleaners in on Valley View? Uh right across is where that KFC was, you know, across from like Cypress College and the where the where the Little Caesars is at?

00 Well, we had a Papa John's in that complex where the nickel nickel was, but it was it was a KFC. >> area. No, not not really. Uh but there was a KFC, so anytime we would get those like family bucket meals >> Oh, yeah. >> it was an event because at the dry cleaners, you know, behind the counter on the carpet, they would my parents would just lay out all the newspapers and we would just get corn and biscuits and mashed potatoes and KFC and that was like for real like you you would ████ just call us royalty. Like that was the ████ most amazing event that could happen in our entire month. >> How often was that? That would happen whenever KFC would have a family meal coupon. It was >> No, it's like once a month or [laughter] something like that. >> Game the system. It'll be like you have the coupon, like let's say you order Pizza Hut, right? If you get a large pizza, you use this coupon, then you get the breadsticks. But then if you use this coupon, you also get a 2-liter soda. So depending on how you ████

51 played your cards, you could get a fat ass meal for just one large pizza. And that was it. That was And sometimes [clears throat] they don't even take the coupon. Remember? Sometimes Like whatever. They don't even take it from you. Dude, you guys I mean Little [snorts] Caesars when when we were growing up, that was like the ████ [laughter] Like now everyone s████ all over it. Well, yeah, but kids don't, right? I don't think so, but >> Little Caesars great for kids. >> Little Caesars we used to get the You remember the Bigfoot pizza? The one that's like it's squares? Yeah, that was a big rectangle? >> Yeah, that was like total dub. >> Do you guys have Little Caesars in Hawaii? We have now. I never grew up with it. It came later. The only The only thing I know about Little Caesars is the joke is like what do Mexicans cut hair with? Little Caesars. That's the only That's the only knowledge I knew about it. Yeah. I see. I see. Yeah, we never had it before. It did We have one in Hilo now, but I've I've been there.

41 What was the Hawaii treat or the Hilo treat that you have in your family? >> We had well musubi's. Oh, that was that was seen as a treat? >> Like a dollar at 7-Eleven. But we our McDonald's are different. We have like saimin, we have taro pies. You can get Portuguese sausage, eggs and rice at our McDonald's. Not that. They don't do that? Not not not at McDonald's. Not at McDonald's. Other places. They have rice? Yeah yeah. So I mean ours is like We would like airheads and you'd wrap the baking musubi and then you'd sell it for like 25 cents at school. Or like ice cake, you'd like freeze it and then you'd flip it over and then you eat the bottom part. Yeah, we more I guess Asian influence. But I mean pork and beans was like my favorite growing up. Just from the cans. All from the can? I love that. Did anybody else do it like this when

31 when my mom made steak, which would obviously be like the cheapest cut of ████ steak you can get on sale Albertsons or Lucky's or whatever at that time. We would always eat it with rice, soy sauce and corn. Anybody else do it like that? Rice, soy sauce? Soy sauce since then randomly the way I love my steak if I if I make it at home I'm I'm eating it with rice with some soy sauce and then corn. The corn on the side? You don't mix it in, right? No, well I mean you can but Nostalgic. ████ JJ's. That's a Chinese style I think. OH. It's just that's how I eat it. That's oh that's like a traditional Asian thing? >> Yeah so. My father-in-law eats spaghetti with rice on the side and I'm like that's wild. That's jolly bee yeah. It's wild to me. Oh that's right. Filipinos like rice with every dish, huh? That's Madagascar too. This is rice.

Yeah I'll get wheat right here yeah. >> [laughter] >> Happened in anywhere in the world. Madagascar? >> Madagascar. It's They eat more rice? Yeah. What? I had no idea. It's cuz there's a lot of Chinese people there? It's It's just cuz it's um cheap carbs. Cheap carbs, yeah. So, you'd have a big So, China doesn't win the most rice in the world? >> [laughter] >> It's a big mountain of rice and there's like three pieces of meat or like a vegetable or something. They They They would work in the fields all day, get paid less than a dollar a day, and they just bring a huge pot of rice and some beans, and they all sit in a circle and just share and eat it. Average Madagascar like build? Like how do they Skinny? Skinny is the average? >> Yeah, they're malnourished.

11 Oh. The build is malnourished. Got it. But like yeah. Ever seen the Holocaust? Yeah. Cuz you know how you go to like some places like the Cook Islands, and they're they don't They're big either, but they're ████ gigantic. Yeah. Polynesians. >> of people here that don't have a lot of money that are gigantic in America as well. That's a fact. But then they they live next to chains and ████ idiocracy. 70% of people on food stamps are overweight, apparently. >> Yeah, that makes sense. >> I mean, you can get a lot with the food stamps. Yeah. You can get a lot of garbage, man. >> [laughter] >> They're in You go grocery shopping. >> Every A lot of places take EBT now. Yeah. Yeah. I really like the pizza. I just kept eating the pizza, too. I was like I don't know. It was just bomb. I just like the pizza and cornbread. You just go there, you know what you like. >> What you do is you get a baked potato, you go to the chili aisle, you pour the ████ chili all over it, make a loaded baked potato. My dad was like he's like all these ████ restaurants, you go to ████ all these places, it's same steak. It's the same from the same cow. He's like dude, I can't believe these idiots fall for this ████ And like so he'd take me to Denny's and we'd eat a steak and I'd be like you're right, dad.
