00 oh I I remember the racist part he he tried to say as an Asian uh being part of the Asian despa I should support his views and I'm like bro dude I've made it in my life because of what I've done it's a merit you know I I put it on my Merit not because of my race anyone that says despa is is a a f [Laughter] [Music] word welcome back to another insightful episode of be careful boys where we have Aram Cho once again I can't get over that dude the way it looks when you're going through this I'm going to ask you an interesting question it's a Hot Topic right now in different ways but I want to know how like has affected your I guess uh entire
50 pre all that how has Dei affected the police force for you um like I got hired because of it yeah I'm just kidding come on hey could be tight yeah and my agency specifically didn't we didn't have any Dei um standards that were imposed on our agency at that time in the did you become a police officer in the '90s or uh 99 but um my current agency no but um I started my career with LA County Sheriff's and LA County had something called The Bowman consent decree so that was before Dei uh sort of after affirmative action and what the Bowman consent decree was was the the courts said there was some lawsuit that uh I think it was a female Deputy didn't get promoted and she got passed over for promotion to promotion went to the court saying that she was passed over based on her gender and the courts agreed with her and they made this consent decree
41 with uh LA County Sheriff saying that 25% of every position every uh rank every uh Department within the sheriff's fent had to be female and um I had uh is that like the precursor to like the Dei thing is that yes well I mean maybe but a lot of agencies Oakland is under decree right now um I sure a lot of those things probably contributed to uh the the Dei initiatives that were uh initiated by the federal agencies but you have this um so I don't know be this probably happened 20 years before Dei was Dei right uh The Bowman consent decree just in LA County and in my head um I'm thinking oh it's just females so it doesn't affect me uh but looking back um I probably shouldn't have been hired when I got
31 hired I think it was um they had a need for uh people that looked like me uh to join the LA County Sheriff's permit because of the growing Asian Community within LA County so I think that might have may have had a factor in it why why do you think you shouldn't have been hired cuz I was immature I was uh 21 22 years old um in college I was in a fraternity um I smoked marijuana I drank a lot and um you know marijuana like if you ask somebody you actually today in California you can when you do a background you don't ask about marijuana it's not it's not a question they expect that you're already a stoner it's legal now marijuana is legal now so you don't ask legal Stoner yeah but when I was getting hired um they asked and uh about marijuana and I may have been fuzzy on the amount of times I I admitted to
21 smoking marijuana but you were high when you answered if I was it proba dude I heard that even now like they're like you did Coke but it was 10 years ago eh that's okay like it's changed yeah the harder drugs are are uh you know like 10 years ago methamphetamine was an immediate disqualifier um but if you applied now and said that you did that several years ago and you haven't since you'll be okay cuz I heard that like d recreational drug use is more accepted than debt is that true or false um I guess it changes from agency to agency so like at my agency debt is um not not so much debt but um credit usage cred because it's a huge Factor um if you are in a huge amount of debt and you just happen to go up on a um I don't know a grow house where they happen to have a large stash of cash how tempting is that
13 for you to take that to satisfy that debt all that well it's Justified cuz then you can satisfy your debt and you can fight crime better just one quick solution sleep better and to those officers that do do that number one it's a crime to do that by Denzel Washington yeah and in the movie uh they do say that right I I forget what movie it was um but they said hey I know your son's having surgery or is ill take this it's going to help you out I mean they would never know it's just going to go in evidence anyway you know is that night watch no I love when they say that evidence anyways right but it's it's they can really you can justify the crap out of it but but what's right is right what's wrong is wrong and that that's one of those black and white things but they dramatize that in the movies but it does happen uh you have to think it happens and so we we that's one of those factor that you think about how do you get in debt
03 number one um a mirative factor so we look into that was he was somebody racking up student loans okay that's different and then and couldn't get a job that's that's way different than someone utilizing credit cards to buy guns cars boats then that's just irresponsible and if if you're showing a pattern of irresponsibility in your home home life what's it going to do in your professional life and I do believe that there's a translation so we we don't we examine the debt we don't just say it's you're amount of debt what if it was like hella protein cuz you're trying to be jacked so you could be a big officer that helps us out we'll take that that's Pro Shop credit card so you felt like when you were applying um yeah looking back um so I mean I remember uh one of my good friends who was a Caucasian guy wanted to be a firefighter and he wasn't selected um and back then you just if you were a white guy you weren't getting
53 hired on the LA County fire so that's a real thing cuz I I saw Adam Corolla talking about his thing with that yeah it's true what do you mean like they're like we got too many of you whites already that's exactly what it was it was a it was an affirmative action W that was real no way wow I thought um even beyond that though for firefighters they just hired family and friends well there was a lot of nepotism I mean cuz look even now um our best recruiters are people within the agency we'll ask people hey you know anybody that wants you know not not people my age because people I hang out with are usually older but uh the younger officers who are doing good do you have any classmates do you have any friends that you played football with that want to become cops uh bring them on a ride along that and and the best recruits we've ever had were recruited from within the agency and to this day we H we give officers a
45 recruiting incentive my agency pays officers $5,000 for everybody that they recruit wow who it's huge um so it gives it incentivizes officers to recruit good talent and it's not just recruiting anybody you they have to make get through a rigorous testing process a rigorous Academy and once they get off probation that's when you get paid so the people that we try to recruit are people that we think are going to make it on the job and those guys often do are really successful whoa so so do you feel like there's uh any direct or indirect concept of di in the agency today not not at my agency um but yeah LA County Sheriffs uh the big agencies that are under the microsope LAPD San Francisco NYPD I mean you see it um you see stories all the time of incompetence um just because someone was
36 selected based on their um demographic and the thing is Dei I had actually had a there was a post I posted recently on my page my Instagram page where I had it back and forth with someone it's funny I was like did you see that cuz I commented on his di post I did too oh no no I didn't and and so this lady basically said Dei is um it's inclusivity for everybody and makes everybody better Workforce is better and um I argued against it because Dei in of itself if you if you separate it yes every every we should have diversity we should have uh Equity we should have inclusion it makes every organizations better but they should have it but it should be Merit based there should be a meritocracy on there and the thing is if I'm if you're the analogy is this if I'm on an airplane and um do I want the pilot to be the best pilot selected
26 because he was the best pilot or because he was hired b on Race gender whatever right and wasn't necessarily the best pilot I would want I want to be up in the air with someone that knows what they're doing and um and so it should be Merit based you want you want a cop that was selected because they were uh they had the Integrity the moral standards the character to be a police officer or do you want no I want the most lesbian cop yeah preferably and and the thing is can you have lesbians that are good Pilots good cops yes can you have uh uh people of all Races and all genders be the best yeah absolutely um but to but to take the Merit away from that I think not only takes away from the profession but it takes away from that individual I would never want to be hired knowing I was hired based on my race or gender or whatever uh I want to know that I was selected because I I competed through a
16 process and was competitive in the process and select was I I like diversity but not if it risks lowering the standard yes if the standards the same obviously yeah like get it as diverse as possible but if you have to lower the standard and if the standards are there to uphold how well you're able to do the job that's when it's scary cuz if it's like you know you always hear Pilots have like better than 2020 Vision like 2010 or 2015 cuz I was looking into this too and and I made a the comment that I wrote to him was um there's two like the ones that support the Dei they think this is a continuation of the Civil Rights Act so they think that you know if di wasn't in place then it would just be nepotism amongst whites and even if you are qualified because of the color of your skin you won't get in that's their mentality behind why they
06 the Dei should be in place right the opposing side which is pretty much what we all believe is it should never be you know forced outcomes because you just need that color there cuz what if there's not enough like for example like if you need an engineering team that's 50% female you have to hire 50% female it's impossible to find that many females in engineering that are going to be up to par because population wise we just can't we just don't have enough so that means they're going to have to just be like hey what do you do I'm a swim coach well we need you to be an engineer so come over here and build this bridge cuz you're female and then so this is the Nuance that I think people cannot really understand cuz the people that are supporting thei they go why would you be against this unless you're a racist because they're assuming that there's a lot of qualified candidates but they're not getting in because
57 they're not white or whatever but then I I think when you look into it it's it's really just like is it Merit based and then like how much of this is actually because of nepotism and they're not no I don't think people are actually answering that yet you I think it's a little broader than that too though like there's the conversation that goes into like the um systemic racism issue right where um if it's a meritocracy and everything's Merit based then maybe people of like color or something like that didn't have the same opportunities to earn or be educated to to have those skills in that Merit and qualify so like until we bridge the gap of opportunity um it will be consistently hard in our system with that oppression to like you know what I tell those people that they're ████ then dumb as ████ I I
48 see how that's the other side of the argument but in the in the 1960s we already had the Civil Rights Act that did that we have affirmative action so we already are in a world where we did take away systemic racism ISM and people will say well then it's it's in institutionalized it's in the system right and I'm like well but there's no policy there was policy back then where it was uh they had Sunset laws where if you were black you got to get out of this neighborhood they were that was to me is actual institutional racism it's it's written in the law you can't be black at this hour right we don't have any of those laws anymore so now it's a boogeyman argument of you guys are white therefore you're racist and I think assuming that their race racist is already racist and it's by people that have never been in the system I think that's the part that makes me mad I've been through so many hiring process
38 right I I was a marine I was applied to glendell PD Burbank PD Santa Monica PD all of them very similar you have a written test like the ASVAB or whatever and then there's a track day everyone goes out and runs you can clearly tell who's the best runner that day who has the best physical fitness for glendel PD you have to do a dummy drag through like ████ whatever it's like very Merit based and you you go day one there's like a 100 people day two becomes 50 day three becomes 20 and so when you see that you're like where is this nepotism or systemic racism that everyone's talking about I'm literally seeing who is actually the fittest for the job like slowly go through and you take the test so that's the part that makes me go man I wish these ████ had like more um or they would actually try to go through the process cuz if I was a
28 police officer I'm this white dude I want my nephew to get in if my nephew can't pass all these test he's still not getting in there's no like direct elevator that goes from ground floor to the top you know there's like so many steps and I'm like dude that sucks that it's the people on the outside that are complaining and they've never been on the inside it's like it's like women saying that NBA WNBA should be more and they should be paid more but they don't ever go to a game yeah they don't support it and being on the inside in the military there's there's like probably one of the bad races that I've seen in the Marine Corps are Vietnamese ████ no I'm serious these ████ come in their parents don't even speak the language they're probably brought here because of some Refugee program so their parents don't speak the language they grew up in the hood they barely graduated high school cuz they're probably taking mollies all day they join the Marine
18 Corps they become sort sort of some sort of PT stud boom snap into place and then they accelerate and then they get uh High promotions and you're just like this guy came from lower than any other American Standard they probably didn't even have a stove no stove cooking with ████ two Marbles and like a magnifying glass and they're able to to make it through and I've seen so many cases of Vietnamese like that I think the the people that push for Dei maybe have been victimized by racist individuals you know you you take racism away from the institution right there's institutionalized racism yeah doesn't exist but there there still are racist individuals that exist and I I think the Dei initiative The Hope was that it would eliminate those racist individuals that were making decisions for companies corporations government agencies to be forced to hire them and
10 then the one step above that is um you know you hope that the person that they hire based on their demographic is the is qualified to do it but I think the the backfire what the reason why a lot you have a lot of opponents of Dei is you have people who are more capable for the job being passed up by people less capable and that really so so what's the happy medium you know it's like how do you how do you combat the racist decision maker well you know how do you do that cuz he might pass every background every psych to say he's not racist but deep down inside you don't know what they're really right in the core of it it just seems weird to like blanket every one of those experiences as it's all racist because it's like don't you need to study all of those individual interactions and examine them to find out if it's truly racism cuz understand the argument of like let's
00 say you have 10 employees and like nine of them are white and all of them keep getting promoted except for the one guy that's not and he claims it's because of racism but he's also late all the time but see the thing is throughout life throughout life all of you guys could admit that more than you've met racist people you've probably met more people that are just not as good as they think they are I remember a that's most of it and that's more common than there are just straight up racists like a lot of the Asian uh creat like in entertainment and acting and stuff the worst ones that always complained about racism they just sucked in general like they they never went to auditions they they have horrible work ethics the other ones that didn't really complain about racism or anything they're actually booking jobs they're doing commercials they're like doing work but then the ones that are the loudest and screaming racism and they don't want Asians on the screen
52 they they they had the worst work it's not that I don't think that exists I think that before you take someone's word for you got to examine the situation really carefully yeah I mean I'm not saying it doesn't exist do you suck first let's see yeah do you suck cuz it's really hard to be undeniably gray like if yeah it's like why would they not pick you cuz then that means like 90% of the people who don't make an American Idol probably think the judges are racist you know what I mean like a lot of them probably yell crazy stuff when they walk they said Randy Jackson was racist they said he had like a no white policy couple Seasons no sorry missing I think there's it's very common that it's very common that people are delusional about why they didn't get this and that's so 100% right because that's me I'm the guy I'm that guy if I didn't make the the fitness test I would have said all the way up until you got your black belt you would say that I was like I don't deserve this
42 in that same conversation that we're were referencing the a couple of slides later uh this guy who's Pro Dei now throws the prejudice against me saying that yeah not racial pre oh there was some racial presence but the main point of it was that I was a cop and that uh I must yeah I must be uh what I forget what the phrase was but I like you suck white dick or something not not that not only that but no he's like oh you're a pig go figure he trying to minimize his opinion like oh cuz you're a cop don't you have anything better to do like like taking away my my rights and and beating on people and come on dude and and he just did exactly what the what people were hoping de initiatives would do were remve the Prejudice but he just he he may have had one or two bad experiences with a cop or he's just seen all the press with the cops and all of a sudden we're lumped into one group and and how
33 hypocritical can you be at that point and he's doing the exact exact oh I I remember the racist part he he tried to say as an Asian uh being part of the Asian despa I should support his views and I'm like bro dude I've made it in my life because of what I've done it's a merit you know I I put it on my Merit not because of my race anyone that says despa is ████ is a a f word there was a comment saying saying that hey because you have the word of the day didn't mean you have to use it today or something like that d e i baby
// end of tape
