00 That would have been really bad. You want to You want to know why? Why? Because I couldn't find and or afford like a nice like Michael Jackson fedora, but I had to do it for the show. So, you know what I did? Went to party sitting out of plastic one. On that Monday, you should have kept that hat and just thrown it to different girls in every class. No. Anytime teacher talks to you, just be like this. What? [Music] Welcome back to a nostalgic episode of Careful Boys. Um, I wanted to ask you guys, was there ever like looking way way back, maybe like high school, that far back, what is a style choice you once made and it turned out to be a flop at the time? Everything looks stupid now

50 looking back, but like something that you might have thought looked good on you as a teen and you got made fun of for it or something. This one doesn't go that far. Oh, sorry. I cut you off, but I'm still going to talk. Um, this one doesn't go that far, but you remember how like all the like the Mexicans and like our neighborhood had like those bowl cuts? Yeah. And Edgar, I had a bowl cut. Yeah. But like you would have to have kind of long enough hair for it to be like a bowl where like it kind of hangs like that, right? All Mexicans had it. I live in Bordon Park. It was a bunch of Mexicans at the time. And uh so I I went to the when I finally could walk to the like cheap barber shop across from our dry cleaners without my parents, uh they're like, "You got to go get a haircut." And I went and I thought that if I like asked for this type of bull cut, then I might look the same, but you have to have longer hair for it to happen. But I had short hair still.

40 So I'm I'm explaining to the guy that I want this like line like where it's faded here. And don't worry about anything outside cuz I want that bull cut, right? The guy's like, "Yeah, babe." Okay. So, he like just tapers the sides. Okay. Yeah. You know, it's not a fade or anything. It's just like, oh, it's just straight blended. Yeah. Cuz he didn't blend it because I wanted that just like hair here, the fine edge, right? You know what I'm talking about. You know, you know, right? And I go back and my mom is pissed at me. Like she's literally like screaming like, "Are you crazy?" And then I doubled down on it cuz I was like, "Well, I'm trying to look like my Mexican friend." You actually said that to her. Oh, you're not Mexican. I feel like that just apparently made it worse. I didn't understand why. You think your parents

31 are racist? They think you're better than You're not Mexican. Yo, my dad had to grab me by the arm and he took me all the way back to the same barber. Yeah. and then explain to the guy that like my kid's an idiot. He messed up. Can you please try and blend this? I might have been like eight or something. You got to walk to the barber shop by yourself. It's like right across the street. And also, my parents are ████ working. They're like, "Oh, okay." They're like, "Hey, he told me to do it. F███." You know, like, dude, when I was like 24, I used to go to this place called Wasteland, which was like a thrift store on Melrose. Yes. Great thrift store, right? And it was like but it was like expensive because it's like like trend sometimes. They had some really good finds and I was like did I just move to LA? I should probably like try to upgrade my look a little bit. But I'm like I'm not very good at this ████ at all. And so I was like okay people are

22 wearing like you know skinny jeans and stuff. I'll give it a go. But I couldn't find a pair of skinny jeans that fit me right cuz I have a big ████ cop. No, I just couldn't fit I just couldn't find a pair of jeans that fit me right. And but I found one. So stupid. But what's but what sucked about it was that they had these the gay ass ████ beads like going down here. Oh, all the weird designs. Yeah, weird. I was like, damn it. The fit is great, but the beads are ████ gay. So I was like, all right, what I'll do is I'll buy the I'll buy the jeans. I'll just cut the beads off. No problem. So then like Well, like it had like metal studs. No beads. Like ████ beads, dude. You mean those bracelet beads? Or you mean like sequins? What the ████ are those? Big gay boys. No, he bought the biggest gay boy pants ever. No, it said they were straight. They had a rainbow tag on it said gay 999. So I was like, "Dude, this is a Okay." I

12 was like, "Finally, jeans that fit me and I can just remove the beads." And by the time I was done, there's so many holes in the ████ thing. You can see my legs. Oh no. I just didn't know better. But I paid $65 to learn that lesson. I have no idea. Do you Did you wear them out anywhere? Never. Ever. Oh, you just couldn't do it. could have destroyed the pants. I was just like, "Yes, the fit." Could you sell it back to wasteland? You should have just kept them. I threw them away. Oh my god. Yeah, I threw them away and like like some gay guy would have loved them. Yo, I remember like I think it was like my sophomore year and my sisters, they're ████ they're ████ dude. Cuz they would love to like try to dress me and be like, "Hey, this would be cute on you." Oh, yeah. That's right. He told us that. I remember. So, I remember, dude, this outfit was crazy. And ever since then, I was like, I'm never listening to these ████ ever again. And it was just one of those days where

02 like nobody ever really picked on the outfit I wore. You know what I'm saying? Like it was I was always flying under the radar. But just today was the day where everybody was like they had something to say about it, right? I remember it was like these cargo shorts with like stripe patterns, but it was like it just they just looked like ████ They were like brown, you know, like. And then they g they made me they were like, "Oh, this will look good." Like a like a kind of it was kind of big on me because I was so little. It was like a big collared purple shirt. A big colored purple shirt. Brown pants. Like Yeah. Like brown cut offs. Like cargo shorts. Like cool lot like ████ capries and ████ No, just regular shorts. But like they're ugly. I'm pretty trash to me. This is fine so far. Today actually it sounds kind of fire. Yeah, but I just remember, bro, like it

54 was so like kind of out of character for like what I would usually wear. And I just remember everybody was like, "What the ████ are you wearing, bro?" They're like, "What the ████ are this s███?" And then all day I just was like, "Oh, you're stressing." But did you go to the mall? You had to buy these things that your sisters picked out. They would like buy stuff for me. I'm like, "Oh my god, like this would be cute. Like, try this out." Cuz I'll be like, "Okay." You know, like I just didn't. And these ████ ████ set me up for failure. And I came back and I was like, "Yo, everyone was ████ mega ████ That's why you love Tim Robinson so much." You lived every single Yeah, bro. Just going, "What the ████ am I wearing?" This pattern on the shirt's not even that crazy. Oh, you really done it this time, Nick. You really done it this time. Everyone's making fun of you. Everyone hates you. Exactly. Like, oh god. I look like a ████ grimace, dude. Big purple. Oh my god. And yeah, I

44 just remember I felt real cool leaving the house and I was like, "Look, these girls know style." like, you know, people like what they wear. I was like, "Yeah, cool. I'll be all right." Was in high school. Oh, ████ Was that in high school? Yeah, high school. When I was in high school and I got into raving, you know how like raving outfits you can't wear anywhere else. No. Yeah. Yeah. Cuz it barely even looks cool there. And it's so ████ extra. And I remember like when I started really getting into it and I also liked um like the dancing element of it and then just like the whole culture of it. Like I remember getting having like full like colorcoordinated sets of things. So I'll have like if I'm Oh, today's going to be blue and white. So I'll have like a baggy white t-shirt, but then a blue and white Puma track jacket. Oh, and then my do-agg will be white. And then I'll have

35 a navy blue kangle hat. And then I'll have these socks. And then the shoes are also blue and white. And then you have it all matched out for your ████ rave, right? But then after you go to rave, you go to like eat ████ with your friends. Dress like a ████ boy. Yeah. You look like a ████ do-agg. You look like a ████ Power Ranger. He's wearing a drag and a hat at a ████ restaurant. Look like John Cena. Yeah, like that. You look ████ ridiculous. But then I remember in high school I just thought I was so ████ cool. This is the coolest Chinese John Cena. And then you have like and you have like maybe I'll have one wristband just and that's white that matches this man. Do you have the pacifier necklace? Yeah. Like just like you have all these little extra accessories and ████ Oh my Oh my plugs. I'll have my plugs be named while this is what it's

27 Yeah. Everything's so ████ extra. Yeah. Really bad. I love the idea that at the restaurant it's like this ████ just did exas. He just touched himself while he's in a pole ████ He's like, "Wo." He's like, "Wa, these napkins are crazy." It was so real cilantro. What kind of napkins are these? Like, it's I feel like the rave era is when you think you're the ████ coolest and you look back at the pictures and you're like, "Holy ████ that was ████ bad, dude." It was cool then to those people though. Like, if I've ran into people like that in public, I'll go, "Oh, they're Ravers. That's cool." Yeah. If I saw someone cross, oh ████ that guy's coolest as Oh, we got color coordinated. That's on theme. Flared pants and ████ Yeah, that was that was upside down visors, frosted tits. Yeah. All upside down visors. Crazy. So extra, dude. I

17 got I got bullied for that because we you know when it shaped me to be the am today. No, there's like a this was in junior year. You know, like when you go to uh a Christian school, the times when you have to like meet up with all the other Christian schools for events, it's like a big deal because like you're like repping your school and ████ and it's a nice chance to like seem like you're cooler than you are cuz nobody knows who you are. So then like I don't know why at the time do you remember like back in the day in the early '90s anyone who did popping wore white gloves? Yeah. Okay, good. Okay, good. So you remember that? I remember that. Fingerless. What's that? Fingerless. They're like, "No, just like white gloves." It's like Mr. Wiggles. It's just easier to see like all the tracing and stuff like that. So, I was able to get some white gloves from

08 the uh music room because they do bell choir and bell choir has to wear the white gloves. So, I took some and I wore them and I had a yellow and white striped uh shirt. You look like a bumblebee. Yeah, like a bumblebee. had black shorts and then uh I had a I had a upside down Nike visor and I had uh bleached tips and I don't know why I thought it was sick to put a ace of hearts in my visor. Oh, hell yeah. Dude, you're fashion forward, baby. Super sick, dude. It's so painful. No, but it was the culture at the time. Hell visual. What does it matter to put that much thought into it? You're like, I'm so ████ cool. I thought like you just build an image. It does. It's like create a character cuz you're going to see all these other people from other schools and they they all just look mad regular in a Christian setting. That's ████ tight. Having a deck like a card in your hat that's like already

58 forbidden. What does that even mean though? It's like the Mad Hatter, bro. Yeah. I thought it was cool to have like the visor literally like this and then you have a ████ thing down visor to it. Keep flying out. We got the buses and you know when you arrive in these schools you have to line up and then you walk as a line and then every school did that. So you start passing other lines and then my friends in high school had this joke that I ironically I started it and then I became the victim of it. It's called true love. You shove people into other strangers and then you try to make it look like it was a serendipitous event. Like guys and girls. Yeah. Like sorry. Yeah. You shove you shove your friend in. High school is so sick. You show your friend to a girl and then he has to go, "Oh, I'm sorry." What's funny is to ████ drop the

50 books at this moment. Yeah, we used to do that to each other. They'd be like, "Through love and you just shove them." And then they did that to me and then my card fell out and I hit this and they shoved me into a girl like like some fat Chinese girl and she was like she was like, "Hey, b████." And I was like, "Oh man." Everybody saw started laughing cuz I was trying to look for my car. Anybody see my ace? My ace. It's the ace of spades. Has anyone seen it? And then it's like you get decked out to just be a mysterious figure. But if you have to do that, people are just like, "Why does he have gloves? Why does he have this? Why does he have a card?" Rather I just wanted to be the guy in the corner like this. Oh, who am I? Well, they want to know more either. This reminds me, dude. This reminds me of my my ████ brother. My brother Nate who just got married. He used to watch a show called Sailor Moon. And there's this tuxedo mask. He's a tuxedo mask guy.

41 He ruined your brain, dude. Dude, he was so cool. He was not cool at all. He was absolutely But it's like all it's all in your mind. You know what I mean? Like you just put this ████ together. You want You want to be the cool guy with the gloves where you see all the hot chicks and you roll by in your heelies and you're in your mind like they're going to ask who that guy is. I'm that guy. I might have a more cringe moment. In Christian schools, it you have a leg up just being different in any way. That's true. But then that ████ it up if you Where's my ace? You look like You look like Don. I'm done. That's it. Oh, my glove fell. Definitely have a more cringe moment than that. Than that. Yeah, for sure. Cuz that's still cool except your friends like killed it for you. True love. Like if if that never happened and you could have stood there. That would your friend saved you because you were going to do his mystery man ████ over here. Your friend saved you. Like who's that

31 creep in the corner? Yeah. Okay. Oh my god. Silently bullied or audibly bullied? Yeah, your friend saved your dumb ass. So, I participated in my school's uh lip sync, right? Yeah. Yeah. You airband, dude. Yeah. Basically, airband, right? Um and this is like one of my first true dance experiences ever in high school, right? So, like we did a medley cuz I was a I was a president of the American Red Cross and we had to participate in order to get club points to like whatever the ████ Anyways, so I finally took this moment to be like, "All right, like let's put a show together." there. And so we do his dance set. We do like Greece to ████ uh Usher. Yeah. Or Billy Jean and Usher. Yeah. I did a Billy Jean solo even though I couldn't dance for ████ Um and then we did like Usher. Yeah. Right. So for an outfit I was like, man, Usher Yeah. had come out and you already know

21 he's wearing the jeans, the white Air Forces, you know, the like the white shirt and like a a button up and a hat and stuff. And I was like, I need to kind of look cool, but it's got to blend with MJ whatever. So, I got these like jeans from ████ Miller's Outpost, right? I couldn't get Air Force Ones cuz my parents would never get that. So, I got some Teimu knockoffs from from freaking Pay Less or whatever. Uh, I had like a white buttonup and then I put on this like black members only jacket that I thought was so cool. That's pretty cool. Sure. Um, and then so I I never dressed up for a show. So, this was the most dress up I like I tried to dress up. intent was there. But like if I'm just regular going to school, I never dressed up in anything I thought was cool, but I thought this was cool. Right. We do the performance and like people it's like people like recognize me like for once because you know you do something on stage. It's like you you're

11 acknowledged. You exist. You're on the spot. This is like my coolest moment of all my high school career. This is the cringe moment. That was like on like a Friday or whatever, right? On a Monday. Oh man, so bad. I was like, "Dude, I should wear this outfit again to a normal school day." To a normal school day. Cuz it's like it's a good You got good good reactions. And like, you know, maybe people be like, "Oh, you're that guy." Oh my god. That's a rough one. That's rough. Now that's ultimate. I feel like I'm there, dude. I feel like I'm right there. But how old were you, dude? That's That's some 15-year-old ████ Do you think I was I was like a senior. Do you think your guardian answer? Oh god, dude. I'm going to I'm going to take a break. I'm going to take a break. Whoa. We didn't die for this. Send mooch down there. This isn't what we died for. This It's so bad, right?

01 What's crazy is nobody said anything for some reason. I had like a No one said anything. No. Into my face. That's way worse. Yeah. Silent bullying probably. Is he doing a rehearsal or something today? Yeah. What happened? How did you know that this was embarrassing? There was just some feeling that came over me like a week live that was like, "Oh, why did I do that?" No, honestly, actually, it was probably like the day of. Were you like, "What have I done?" Yeah. It was just kind of like, "Why did I do this?" This is the It's the wackest thing ever. I like I like deleted any street credit I got Friday on Monday right away. This guy can't let go. Like I pushed to humanity too far. God, dude. Oh, man. You wore to a regular school day and went to class like that. Was like a fedora kind of ████ No, no, no. I didn't wear the What? Oh, you didn't have a hat? No, I just spiked hair. I

51 had a hat for the show and I threw it off after the Billy Jean thing, which was which was dope. So, the rest of your outfit, what did it look like on the school? It was exactly that. It was a black members only jacket, a white button-up, some Hey, can I get the hat back and white shoes? I wish you did it multiple days because you're like, maybe they didn't they didn't see me. Yeah, maybe I got to hit him with a I bullied myself after that and it was just Nobody ever said one thing. Nobody said anything. I was just like, but then not saying anything was enough cuz you thought yours was going to be the tightest move, right? Yeah. Look, maybe it's because I expected someone to be like, "Hey, you're that guy." Nobody gave No, nobody gave two ████ Oh ████ Cuz at that age, all the kids are just like, "Oh god, I don't What am I going to do to class today? They're they're for sure not thinking about nobody else." But that's like imagine you're dressed as Zoro and you're going through

41 Mexico and in like 1822 and nobody says anything. He's like, "I'm never doing this ████ again." People forgot about me. They don't think that I'm ████ They think I'm dumb. They think I'm wash. Why' I do this? Like, it's just some guy. Who cares? We got to go work at the coal mine. This sucks. That life sucks. Oh god. Yeah, whatever. We all got to learn. Nice mask. We all got to learn. That's not too bad. At least you didn't have the hat on. That would have been really bad. You want You want to know why? Why? Because I couldn't find and or afford like a nice like Michael Jackson fedora, but I had to do it for the show. So, you know what I did? Went to party sitting out of plastic once. The plastic plate material. That's not embarrassing. That's getting the deals, baby. Let's ████ go, dude. That's cool. On that Monday, you should have kept that hat and just thrown it to different girls in every class. This is for you. No. Anytime teacher talks to you, just be like this. What?

33 Dude, that was your imagination. I love That's who I I thought I was. Yeah. You know what I was channeling? Do you remember in battle? channeling like a ████ But do you remember in B who's seen Battle Royale? Okay, remember in Battle Royale, all the kids in the class and then there's these two other guys that are in the corners of the class like this. Yeah, the mysterious. Yeah. And they go, "Wait, this guy, he's the guy that joined for fun. That's who I thought I was." Reopen mental hospitals. And then if someone talked to me, if you if you talked to me, said hi. Hi. Okay, he's cool.
