05 This roll Oh, you're rolling it? Okay, cool. Thanks. All right, last one. 3 2 1 I love topics that are going to piss off nerdy people. Um so, it's been kindly wildly going around and this has happened more than once. Uh a student who by all marks of academia top of his class in every possible freaking way uh highest scores undeniably probably among any other person that would submit an application to all of those prestigious universities and still doesn't get in. >> It's not fair. >> Is he Chinese? Well, yeah, he's Chinese. >> Yep. That's wack. >> Makes sense. >> That's wack that they're doing that to my people, dude. >> Harvard or whatever? >> I I think all of them. I don't I think um or all the like top ones. >> Maybe he went to the interview and

55 they're like, "I hate this fool." >> That's what I'm saying. But like of course like the the off-the-cuff hip-shot reaction is to be like boo racism. >> Boo affirmative action. That's what's going on right now, right? It's like Asians don't get um in or for some reason or like >> Well, I mean it there's less spots for Asians that are eligible, that's for sure. >> Yeah, cuz they're trying to make it where it's like here's all the spots for uh here's like the score spots and then here's like the affirmative action spots and the score spots there's already way too many ████ Asians that are scoring too high, so they're maxed out. >> for diversity. You have to knock some Asians off. >> Yeah. You know what kind of sucks though? You heard about the bamboo ceiling and stuff? So, basically like Asians get hired, but um you know, and they do well, but they could only reach like kind of right

46 before executives and stuff like that. And then there's a graph that kind of came out about how like you know, East Asians and Indians and they do pretty well as far as like income earning, right? They do well in school, they go to these Ivy Leagues. And then um yeah, they'll they'll do well in terms of salary, right? But then you know we all know like executives and top dogs and owners like they don't really draw a salary. Like Jeff Bezos makes 80 grand a year salary-wise, right? Like when you make real money, when you make real calls and stuff, you're not at that level. And then they showed a graph of like all the different people that were becoming CEOs and stuff. And Asian men were like at the bottom. You had like white female at the top of the newest hirees of CEOs cuz they're doing the

37 whole like trying to make it diverse. Are they counting Indian dudes as Asian? >> Indian dudes um are up there, but it's East Asians that are down here. So like cuz they when they did the specific like what races are doing well. So it's like I actually think Asians are getting the ████ end of the other stick because they play to like >> Too much by the rules? >> They play too much by the rules, but also culturally we don't have the traits of what it takes to be the CEO in America. Meaning like you got to be really good at conversation. You got to be really good at debate. You got to be really like aggressive. You got to be like the things that we're taught are virtuous in our culture doesn't work for leadership in America.

27 >> That's true. >> So then it Asians will be really good like facilitators, right? Like you'll get to a certain point, you'll make a high income, but you'll never be the owner and you'll never be the CEO because you're not savage enough. Basically, or you're not cavalier enough, you're not loud enough, you're not good at debating. Also, you need to have a lot of empathy, too. Like we're pretty kind of like stick to yourself and handle your own ████ and don't bother others or like whatever, you know? And then to make a good leader in the West, you need to have strong empathy to like be able to sort out your employees and ████ >> So. >> I think in the also in the college level, like in this situation where like let's say you got the best marks that you could possibly get and you know you got better marks than some other Asian guys who did get into the colleges

18 and you still don't get in. >> Yeah. >> And there's like a mass outrage in your behalf because you should deserve it. Yet, I think a lot of people don't maybe they've never been to college they don't ████ know this. But like whatever impression you make as a character to the person that you're interviewing with it kind of seals the deal for you right there. >> That's the technicality they're getting a lot of people on, meaning like let's say there is an overwhelming amount of applications coming from Asians, right? So they got to control the herd somehow. And the way they're weeding it out is they're saying like, "Oh, you don't really like you're you don't have a whole you don't have personality." >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> So and then but then that's a stereotype too. Like a lot of Asians have ████ like personality, charisma, and social skills, right? >> Yeah. >> But you know, the the what they're

08 saying is oh they're just focused too much on schoolwork, they don't have anything else going for them. >> Yeah, that's the thing that I'm seeing a lot too is that it is like yeah, it's metrics and it's numbers. But then maybe like you're saying, maybe the personality's not there, the >> You're not well rounded enough, yeah. >> Or or the things you've done for your community are not there. >> You know what Chinese people are going to start doing though? Or Asian people that can't get in they're going to start hiring personality coaches. They're going to have >> You're right, you're right. >> style >> Like I feel like they're going to get Yeah, they're going to get tutoring for that and then now what are they going to say? >> Well, because that's the thing it it is important, but I and I we all know that I guess like in Asian parenting they don't put that very uh they don't put it forward. >> No. >> It's it's more like just prove yourself with with your results. But then yeah, but then they don't understand how much being a ████ Van Wilder type of dude could help you out in some cases when

58 you're dealing in interpersonal communication, which I think is in some ways even greater of an asset. >> But I think it's cuz the the the corporate style in Asia is so different where like there's not much debate. There's not much discussion. There's like a top-down authoritative leadership system. And then over years and like being loyal, you move up the ranks. >> Yeah. >> So like the way their companies work is like you try to be I don't know if it's really merit-based cuz everyone does have some form of nepotism, but it they focus more on the task than the social aspect of it. Where like I think in the states like everyone's throwing their opinion and like trying to get the vote to and then sway people. Right? Like that's their style and then

48 I don't think Asians are good at that. >> Right? They they would rather just read the metrics and go that's a better decision. >> Yeah, I think the the discussion style is different. Like everyone takes their turn, they don't cut each other off. Like it's different from like Western style. Like if you think about I think the people that do it the best is probably a Jewish community where they're so good at a very young age to debate. They they it's in the culture to debate and have discussions and like and then argue for and against, right? Whereas like you don't do that in the Asian household. You don't have discuss No, like you just shut the ████ up and listen to dad. >> Yeah. >> And then um you speak when you're like allowed to and you wait your turn. >> Yeah. >> So like it's I think they just sharpened that tool very very early on. And so

40 because of that, they know how to navigate way better in a leadership role. >> In in in your opinion, would you say that like let's say that you're you know, in a highly established historical university like Yale, right? And so like every student that you let into your campus is going to represent Yale. They're going to go off after they graduate, represent Yale. And I think at that point it's like if you just have a dude who's sort of like a machine and he just like ticked all the boxes but you don't want that to represent Yale? >> Yeah. >> You know what I mean? Like >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. >> I think that's where how they look at these things. I mean, I don't go to Yale. I don't know. But I think like in terms of representation of your establishment, that's where they're I think they're thinking more long-term than just who scored the highest, you know?

30 >> Yeah. >> about like culture, too. Like what what did they think an ideal Yale graduate looks like and how can they preserve that culture, too? >> it's a guy >> from China. When I think of the visual >> Some nerdy ass ████ with glasses and ████ >> white dude with a pink polo or something. Yacht shoes. That's what I think. And I think that's what they want to keep, too. >> Yeah. I think so, too. >> Like if if you I think you replace with any other race if they were scoring top, they probably wouldn't have picked those guys, either. >> Well, I think I think places like at least when you when you really see the society, right? When you get Harvard, Yale, these like huge universities that are like prestigious forever, right? When these guys see each other in life, like alumni, the connections they make are ████ priceless, right? Like you you realize a dude at the other firm that you're

20 having problems with is from your alma mater, you can hash it out. Like these things are really really priceless connections. So after after university, they become almost purely social, right? Because then the social the that aspect is the weapon and is the shield and is the connection. So I feel like if if they don't possess that part of their brain as an activated source, you know, like it's almost like what am I going to use you for then? Like you're just going to >> You're going to crunch numbers for me, Chang. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. You You're always going to be a ploy. You'll never be like You'll never be the guy that's the new mover and shaker in the industry that they want to associate with. >> Yeah, or >> Yeah. >> See Chang be the guy that comes back to the alma mater, like the alumni events. >> Yeah. >> Help donate and help and Yeah, and be guest speakers. If he's like like how much more is this is he going to nurture the ecosystem? >> going to have Yale pride or is he going

10 to use Yale to just further his own goals, you know? >> That is the Chinese style. >> There you go. That's what I'm thinking. I don't obviously don't know ████ because I don't know this guy's situation. But I would guess if I had to If I was forced to guess, I don't think he made the right impression. That's it. >> Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I think at that level though, it's more than just grades. >> Yeah. >> Cuz there's a whole network of old boys. >> Yeah. >> You know, like old families, old boys, it's a club. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. >> And it's not so much I guess yeah yeah, you could there's a merit-based part of it cuz they want intelligent people to come through. Because I think even that too, like yeah, you could crush it with grades and all that, but if you don't have innovative thought cuz most people want to go to a university to be like I want to research X, Y, and Z. Like I

02 want to come to your university, I want to do some ████ quantum physics ████ I'm not just I'm not consuming information here, but I want to contribute information here. I want to be a professor here. >> Yeah. >> There's a lot of that. But I actually think because it's it's more competitive for Asians cuz there's so many applicants. So, just having dope grades, you need more than that. >> And I think it was a dead giveaway that the dude got so mad about it that he didn't get it. >> But the funny thing is he didn't get any of it, right? >> Yeah. didn't get any of the schools. Not one ████ >> Not one of the top ones I think. The all the Ivy Leagues I I think >> Is it undergrad? >> Um I'm not sure. I don't think I don't know. >> Cuz I was like I want >> it wasn't No, yeah. >> Cuz I was like cuz I'm like for undergrad did they even do like in-person interviews or video interviews now? I don't have no idea. >> I mean I mean maybe he had an essay and he just >> Oh, yeah. You could just tell from his

53 >> Chinese. >> Cuz I know and I'm speaking from like a position of like I think that's how I got into college. Because you know, I went to community my my whole like uh at least the years after high school I went to community. And then I did ████ So You Think You Can Dance? And then with that notoriety and after fulfilling all of my um my transfer credits, I applied to UCI. For ████ sure I'm not the highest scorer. For ████ sure. I'm not bad, but I'm not the highest scorer, but I know that there was an asset to at least my notoriety at the time of being like a figurehead of of like um very few Asian Americans on TV. The ████ course they considered that. Of ████ course I got in because and I got full ride. >> Wow. >> Yes. That's what I'm trying to say is that like I know for a fact speaking as a person that at least employed that side of okay, academically I'm not the

44 top, but I have something else to offer to this community. You know what I mean? >> Great come on in. >> You know how far charisma does go though? I got a buddy who went to an Ivy League, but he got denied. But he was in New York and um his girlfriend at the time was just like, "Let's just go talk to someone there." And he's like, "Really? But I got denied though." But he really wanted to go to the school. He went straight to the people that were the gatekeepers, started ████ talking them up, telling them his story, how he ████ went to prison, all this stuff. And then like um he got accepted, dude. They made space for >> You reversed >> ████ verdict though? He's Asian too. >> So that's how far you can go with basically charisma and convincing and

36 social skills. >> I believe it. >> If you're sitting there stewing cuz you got denied, it's like well, hey dude, I know someone that didn't really make it, but he got in. I mean, that's a ████ really hard thing to do. >> Yeah, but I I mean that's obviously my example is at a ████ point zero zero one percent of this kid. But uh it's possible for sure. You have a good enough essay, they want to see something creative happen. They don't want They They got to read through ████ clones of the last paper all day long, you know what I mean? It's got to be like something sticks out. They'll take a second look or a closer look. >> You got to go down there and raise them up. >> student that's applying, come on. >> Dude, people would probably smashing me grades wise. >> You should have said you were a ████ you work you grew up in a brothel. >> Yeah, that's good. It's a good backstory. Yeah, the sob stories definitely go a long way. But that's what I mean is that this this kid or

27 whatever that he's pissed off about it, he didn't have to he didn't have to mean it. He could have just like like you said taken the Kumon charm school and figured out the right ways to say the right ways to interview, which in itself is a skill, right? >> For sure. >> Yeah, especially against the high performers, it's probably less likely. >> Yeah. >> For a candidate to have that skill set. >> not racism every time.
