00 I don't think our brains are a match. Yeah, it's like your restaurant's killing it, but you got a one star. And welcome back everybody to another episode of the Careful Boys where we are here with Mr. Joe Wong. Wait a minute. What's with the hammer there? We use it to fix chairs cuz the wheels fall off. Yeah, Colleen fell out of a chair earlier, so we have to The wheel came off. So, yep. Y you have to fix things with a hammer. I used to used to break things with it, but So, question for everybody. What's the shortest relationship you ever had? The shortest? It was titled a relationship. I I have one. Can I start it? Yeah.

50 Yeah. Once uh I kind of liked a girl. This was when I was at school. So, I just said, "Uh, can I be your boyfriend?" She said, "Uh, let's just be friends." And that's it. True story. What grade were you? So it never started. Well, so that's the shortest cuz Yeah, I guess. Yeah, it's got to at least go to a 1% something. It's got to start, actually. No, this is 50%. Okay. It's a It's instead of boyfriend, it's a friend. At least halfway there. That's funny. I thought you were like making a non-consent joke. I was like, cuz Oh, that's a that's not good. That's too real. Oh, I'm sorry. Maybe it's okay nowadays. Be more careful. I feel like all of my relationships

40 um in my teenage years were like that. Like you're just with someone for like a month and then the first week you're like, "Oh, I'm going to get married." And then the third week you're like, "F███ you. No, ████ you." And then it's done. And then I think yeah I've had I don't it wasn't until like I was 17 where I've been with someone for over a year and that was a huge accomplishment cuz before that it was like you're asking you don't even ask for girlfriend boyfriend status or you start calling each other that and it's like 3 months and it's done. Yeah. But I thought that was normal in high school. That was normal. I honestly had the exact same career path. So do we even count that? No. They have to like graduate. That's your high school love life career path. You got to like date like two or three people, but it's all max like a month or

31 two. Okay. And then and then my senior year is when I ended up finding a girlfriend that I I was with for exactly like just over Yeah. And that's a huge I was one year older than her. So I went to college and she was still a senior in high school. And you don't want to be a So you then I No, it wasn't. It was just suddenly you start meeting all these people in college and you're like these are women. But I still had like no place so whatever. Yeah, that's true. Cuz that age gap was so huge cuz I I remember going like I don't want to date a girl that has a curfew. Yeah. It's it's only going to hold me back now and we don't have curfews and people are living alone and that's a giant lifestyle. Yeah. Yeah. That's true. And also saying your girlfriend's in high school is crazy and you're not in high school. Well, when you're in the dorms, like 50% or not 50%, but a good

24 amount of people like have like high school relationships, but it's about like seeing everybody slowly drop off. Yeah, exactly. Like, oh ████ So, wait a minute. When you guys in high school, you had curfews? Yeah. Yeah. Oh, like what time? I I No, like your No, your parents set the curfew. So, like if you can't just stay until 5:00 a.m. the next day, your parents would be like, "Hey, be home by dinner or be home by 9:00 or something." Oh, okay. Yeah. Mine wasn't even like a time to go out. Yeah. It was just like go home. So, as long as I got home before my parents got home from work, Yeah. it was like I was home the whole time. Oh. Oh. What time is that? 6:00. Well, the problem is they started getting real smart and they started sending one home earlier. Used it used to be a dry cleaners closed at 7:00. they would close together, but then it

14 be like my dad would be like, "All right, well, we're gonna start sending you home, mom, so you can get to cooking right away." So, by the time I close up the shop and come home, his food is ready. And that meant that it cut it down for me and my sister to be like, "Well, we better be home before like 5:00, which sucked because school gets out at like 2:25, right? You guys got like two few hours." Yeah. So, let's hang out at Target. Like, what the ████ By the time I was in high school, I think I was so wild. My dad just said, "Just call me once a day." And so I know you're alive. Cuz I wouldn't be home for 2 weeks. What? Yeah. I'd be like, I don't know, at a friend's house, we stay there like one thing leads to another. Everyone's sleeping there for like 3 days. Then we go out of state or travel or do some crazy stuff and then we're gone for like another two weeks. So my dad's just like, he like, "It'd be nice

04 if you just call me even once a day so I know you're alive." And there's no cell phone. Yeah. Really at that time. So I just be like, "Oh, babe. I'm at like whatever house playing Dance Dance Revolution." Okay. Okay. Now you have a collect call. I'm alive. Like Okay. I don't know those luxuries. I had to create crazy lies and sneak out of my house, steal the car. I feel like dudes also have a different That's so true. That's true. Cuz I remember girls having curfew into their 20s. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. As they should. Yeah. Should be shackled to the house, ladies. Just to be walking around. You got a bunch of Barts going around, you know? Fair enough. Kind of true though, dude. If I had a daughter, I'd be like, you

54 have curfew forever, brother. I think my shortest. Hey, Bart, you don't do that anymore, right? Just disappears for a week. Well, for 3 days, I'm not home. I'm over here. Oh, he's asking if you call your dad. Call my dad. No, no, no. Oh, no. Stop. Oh, yeah. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Go ahead with your short-term relationship. Our shortest relationship I think was three 3 weeks or two weeks, maybe two weeks. Um, I met this girl, uh, her name was Nancy at a party. It was like one of those like, uh, there's just a bunch of random people there. And then she was pretty fun. And then we traded numbers. We started going out. And in the beginning it was, you know, you connect on like just like interests or whatever. So we both like to work out and it was cool. And then she was like a really fun person. And then as

45 relationships progress, you know how like interests turn into like um I guess ambition or not am maybe ambition like what you think about how you view the world and stuff. And in this in college I was really trying to be a good student cuz I ████ up so much in high school. I got kicked out of three schools. M so I was like, "Okay, college is the place I got to fix my ████ and and uh and really be studious." So academics mattered a lot. And I remember we're driving, I think, to the movies or In and Out or something. And then uh I was, "Oh, so how'd you do? Uh how'd you how were your grades for last quarter?" And then I remember her going, "Oh, they're they're really good." I'm, "Oh, sick. Hell yeah." I'm like, "Cool." Like she might be the person for me where we like, you know, go through college together and we can help each other. And I was like, "What'd you get?" And she was like, "I got a 2.3." And I was like, "You think 2.3 is good?" And I remember

38 I think I even pulled over to uh into like a parking lot. I was like, "Let me see." She gave me her report card and I was like, it was like like like B C D whatever. I was like, "What the f███?" And I didn't know how to like like it's cuz even if she said I ████ up, I need to do better. It'd be different because I'm like, "Okay, cool." Like she she's aware that she's delusional. She's on Earth and she scales out a four, right? But when but when she's like, "Yo, my ████ restaurant's killing it." And it's like a one star on Yelp. You're like, "Oh my god." So, I I uh I didn't know how to like um like break it up based off of grades. So, I went home and I That is the most

29 Asian breakup I've ever You got back, right? Barnival. I know. And he's a troublemaker at this. He's not even a good student. He's judging her. Yeah. No math. I was getting bad grades. I was getting bad grades. I need someone to help me. What was your score? That's so funny. I think I was 2.5. No, I was I tried my ████ ass off and I think I started with like a 3.3 maybe, but eventually it got higher and higher. But I had to learn study skills. Like I didn't even know how to study. And so like um but she's out here like yay positive. And you're like what the hell's wrong with you? I'm like what the hell was school you trying to get into with those grades? And then so um I was like ████ how do I break this up with her? Cuz I'm like this is crazy. And like she technically didn't do anything wrong. And I was like, I got to I think I have

20 to write all my thoughts down. So I wrote uh I think she's stupid. I wrote I wrote a letter to her. Uhhuh. And then I was like, "Oh, but that's ████ up if you like break up over a letter." So I was like, "Hey, uh, can we meet?" I have to read you a letter. Read you the letter that you wrote. Oh, bro. You got a 2.3 in relationship, dog. Yeah. Dear Nancy, I was utterly disgusted by your great clear your throat before reading it. Dear Sorry, I'm a little nervous. Nancy. Dear Nancy, let me turn Let me turn up kisses down a little bit. It's like your restaurant's killing it, but you got a one star. Does that make sense? All analogies. I'm just waiting around the question. Oh, you don't understand. Okay. Uh, let me have another example. But you But why were you sure that she can read? See, that's why you got to read it. I

00 give her the benefit of the doubt. She might not even have been able to read it. Oh, boy. What was the real reason? Is cuz she was just so stupid. You couldn't imagine being with someone that dumb. No, it was just what she thought was good. So I'm like, "Bro, you're delirious." I'm like, "You're delirious." She Yeah, she's done her, bro. I thought it's like lack of aspiration or something. Yeah. I'm like, if she was like, "Oh, dude, I ████ up. I have a 2, whatever." Oh, dude, that's me, too, dude. I'm ████ up all the time. A lot of guys don't like ambitious girls. But you wanted ambitious one. Yeah, cuz I was trying to fix myself. So, I'm like, I can't be I can't If I'm trying to learn how to swim, I can't be the lifeguard, too. So, what if I'm trying to learn how to swim? Do you know what I mean? You know what I mean? I'm trying to get my life better. I need I need a lifeguard. That's when it clicks for her. Lifeguard. I can't be

51 the lifeguard. It was like, I'm dead weight. I ain't trying to also have dead weight. We can't board dead weight. So, what did she say? Going to drag each other down. Treading water. What was her reaction? Did she really start crying? I remember. No, I remember I beat around the bush enough. But this is also how cool she was. She's like, "Ah, cool. I get it." Whatever. That's how dumb she was. Maybe that's how it That's how dumb she was. So, we going to see each other next around the b bush on on the subject. I forgot. I forgot what I said, but it definitely wasn't um your standard is so ████ low. You're so ████ stupid. It wasn't definitely wasn't that. But that's what you wanted to say. He probably ended the letter like, "Are you down to just have sex only?" He's like, "That's cool. That's cool. I'm down with that." Yeah. Can we just stay friends that ████ with that? Oh,

42 yeah. Yeah. That was That was hard. That was hard. That was brain cuz I'm not like I'm also I'm already not like I'm like, you know, I'm already not articulate now. So imagine when you're like 21, you're even less articulate and then you're also like not very emotigent. Emotionally intelligent. Then it's like Yeah. If I'm already not emotionally intelligent and not articulate, I'm like it's like ████ stone age trying to get my feelings out. Yeah. It was just stupidity on my end, too. Yeah. I totally feel you. That was so genuine. I totally feel you on that. It's all Nancy.

32 He has a Nancy, too. That is so funny. Yeah. Yes. It's a fascinating story. Did you ever you ever experience anything like that? What? You never experienced anything that where you're like, "Oh, your standards don't match my standards." No, I never experienced that cuz uh you know, everyone has a 4.0 in China. Yeah, I usually don't don't care about her grades that much. Yeah. Yeah. Probably for him it was like if you didn't bring your coal to school like every day like damn you forgot again like what is going on at home? Cuz I I always had bad grades until the equivalent of the 11th grade in America. So yeah, I'm very okay with people has who have really Doesn't that mean like your parents would beat you like your whole life then? Well, my dad didn't

22 beat me because of that. But they're like, "We can't lose more brain cells." Exactly. Hit him with his lower body. But but what my dad did was he actually uh refused to speak to me for half a year. Oh shoot. Oh ████ We we had dinner together. He was the shortest relationship. Oh yeah, nice cuz my grade was just so bad. And I on top of that I lied about it too. Yeah. Yeah. I lied about my grades. But at the time I didn't know they had the PTA meetings. Yeah. Imagine my parents go to school thinking their kids doing great and they all the great. Oh ████ What a surprise. So he wouldn't talk to you at dinner and stuff. No. No. Wait. When you said stuff, did he go I don't hear that? Oh yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Just there's

12 somebody talking. Yeah, there must be a ghost in the house. Yeah, that's also very Asian. It's pretty rough. But that was the mo that wasn't the most Asian though cuz I think the record was some kind of remember there was it was on the news a Japanese husband refused to talk to his wife for like Oh yeah. years or something. That's some Wow, that's crazy. Yeah. What about your kid? If your kid doesn't have good grades, you don't really care as much, too. I don't care. But then the thing is, um, my son had always had good grades. Good grades. That's why I have no idea how to educate him, you know? Just like, so you don't talk to him either. Your grades are too good. I'm not talking to you. We're done. They know

02 you're a nerd cycle. You just want to repeat it. Yeah. Colleen, shortest relationship. I feel like my committed relationships have always been minimum a year. So anything other than that I just call it dating. You don't before a year there's never like oh this is my boyfriend or vice versa that there's like I get to a stage where it's it's dating and then when I decide to commit then it it's usually up until a year. So you date up until the year and then that's No, not like it's not like structured like that, but it's my relationships have lasted minimum a year. Oh, for for those. But I don't I can't say like the relationship title's throwing me off cuz I would just call that dating. We're not

52 like committed to one another. What's your longest relationship? Three years. Three years. So basically, you never had a a short-term relationship. Yeah. I just it's just dating. Okay. Right. Cuz unless they ask you officially, Yeah. what's dating like just like getting to know each other, but then it's still open. Yeah. Still open until you have that conversation. Is there is there ever like before like that like uh the year thing um a defining of exclusivity? Even if it's dating, wouldn't that just be a relationship at that point? Yeah. You're exclusive. Yeah. Right. So at that point it would be usually a year. Oh ████ All right. It's structured part. It's very structured. One year probation. Yeah. Yeah. One year probation. You get to learn people in that time frame. You know, it is too

42 quick though after you meet someone that in two weeks you you ask to go steadies. Well, for me, I feel like that's so high school, too. You don't really go ask to go steady and then like Yeah. That's how you scare girls off, I think. Well, I don't even ask girls to marry me. I just tell her. Yeah. Yeah. You I just don't mind. You said tell her we're married. What? Yeah, that's exactly what happened. Yeah, I didn't propose. Oh, really? Mm- You just asked her to sign. He was like, "Sign right here." Wait a minute. I can't tell if you were kidding or not. No, seriously. My wife started calling me her fianceé. I'm like, "I'm not." And then she goes, "Yes, you are. We're about to get married. We're engaged." And I'm like, "But I didn't propose." So, we're boyfriend and girlfriend. And then we went straight to married. There's no in between. It's very structured. Wait a minute. Technically, she proposed to you about Huh? Technically, she proposed to you if

34 she just says, "We're married." No, he said to her, "We're married." Oh, yeah. You said to her. Yeah. I said, "We're going to get married." Cuz Oh, you're a dog, man. He He didn't He didn't propose either. That's propose either.
