Not every Asian has the same sob-story of misfit exclusionary lost-youth upbringing. If you grew up in the 90s/early 2000s SGV culture, a great number of you might remember an entirely separate world, somewhat detached from the influence of mainstream popularity, and ruled by a distinctive side-class that no outsiders could socially match. In the “Got Rice” galaxy, the scene was totally self-sufficient and needed nothing from the normies who wished to alienate it. This ecosystem had its own hierarchy, and no interest in belonging anywhere but within itself. Once the spectrum of that generation finally broadened, the rigidity of the old ways softened up, and stronger motions toward assimilation took off. And with the internet age, the idea of such a narrow, gatekept culture, just didn’t hold up to the inevitable globalization of almost everything.
