Bart Kwan

a.k.a. “Rob Bart”

The OG. Founder, Marine, powerlifter — and the show's angriest deadpan.

Co-founder of JustKiddingFilms / JK News, started with Joe Jitsukawa while at UCLA. Writer, director, on-camera lifer. U.S. Marine Corps veteran, competitive powerlifter, serial entrepreneur.

From Monterey Park, CA. Taiwanese/Cantonese-American.

# How Bart Got to the Table

Bart started it. In 2007, he and Joe Jitsukawa — two guys clowning the characters at their MMA gym — picked up a camera as 'Unco Same' and 'Unco Chin' and built JustKiddingFilms out of nothing.

# Lore at the Table

  • Unco Same before the gym and the war stories, Bart was 'Unco Same,' the loud FOB 'uncle' character played opposite Joe's Unco Chin. Two guys mimicking the characters at their MMA gym in 2007 — that duo literally launched JustKiddingFilms.
  • The Fake Marine Translator Bart is a real U.S. Marine Corps vet (not Korean military, the common mix-up), and his signature service bit is the story of playing a 'fake Korean translator' in the Corps. A tall-but-true war story that gets retold constantly.
  • The Wrong Tattoo back in 2003 he and his best friend got matching Japanese-character tattoos that turned out grammatically wrong. Two Marines walking around to this day inked with something that doesn't quite say what they thought.
  • Iron Discipline powerlifter, gym-builder, the table's resident hardass about training and self-discipline. The intensity is real, and so is the deadpan rage when something (or someone) wastes his time.
  • Chinese, Raised Mexican a warm running identity bit: ethnically Taiwanese/Chinese, but fluent in Mexican family life after marrying into Geo's world. 'How old were you when you found out you were Mexican?'
  • Trauma-comedy a surprisingly dark autobiographical streak; Bart openly mines a rough childhood for laughs, and the cast treats it as the wellspring of his on-camera intensity.
  • The Forever Home every house Bart buys is, sincerely, 'my forever home' … right up until he sells it and moves to the NEXT forever home. He's done it something like five times now, so the cast no longer lets him say the word 'forever' with a straight face.
